7mm BR hunting bullet?

I used to run 130gr sierra SSP bullets in my 7br. I see they are no longer available, is there a good alternative hunting bullet for big game? I have used my xp100 to kill 5 cow elk and 4 mule deer, it was very effective. Bullet performance was not always great, but they all went down very quickly.

Sierra 130 HPBT MK or 140 HPBT GameKing. Part numbers 1910 and 1912, respectfully. On the former, make sure that it’s terminal effects are what you want.

I’ve been shooting both in my 7-47.

I’d try both in wet phone books or homemade ballistic gelatin to check for terminal effects.

Partitions have always been a good choice.
+1 for Partitions.Cant go too far wrong with Nosler.
We recently loaded some 140 Accubonds in the 7mmMagnum and got one hole groups. My buddy at works dad shot a nice mulie buck at 280 yards and it was DRT.Good luck hunting, enjoy every minute of the hunt:)

A bullet that exhibits controlled expansion at 7 Mag rifile velocity, is going to be more like a FMJ at 7 BR pistol velocity.

Look for a bullet that is normally thought of as much more violent to get something like the terminal effects that you want in your context.

I have a similar situation in my 30 Major AR. The 125 gr ballistic tip is normally a super violent bullet. At 2600-ish muzzle velocity, though, it becomes a controlled expansion bullet.

I've had excellent results with the 120 grain Sierra ProHunter on whitetails. No experience with this bullet on elk or mule deer, however.

I would lean toward a Nosler BT or possibly something even less tough. At 7 BR velocities they'll hold up fine, and unlike the tougher bullets, they will probably actually expand at those velocities. The BT Hunting bullet is a fair bit tougher than the BT Varmint. It won't blow up on the surface.

In my .222, 55gr Lapua soft points are downright bad medicine. I've taken hogs, deer and coyotes with good effect. They give 18"-24" penetration and when given a broadside on an animal of similar thickness they leave 1"-2" exit wounds. I thought they would be even better in my .223AI. Well, they made softball sized balls of jelly on the surface of the hog that I had to shoot three times, and separated a bobcat from his entire rib-cage(ruined that hide!). It turns out that they are actually somewhat fragile bullets, but the modest velocity of the .222 allowed them to hold up well enough to get good penetration. V-Max's and BT Varmint bullets are more fragile, and offer only 6-8" of penetration in my .222.

at what velocity?
7MM BR is pushing a 120 or 130 only about 2400fps.

I used these in a TC Contender barrel chambered in 7-30 Waters at velocities very similar to what you are getting in your 7mm BR.

My shots were limited to 100 yards or less and bullet performance was very good on whitetails at these distances. Again no experience with anything larger.

The Accubond and Partition are designed to open up nicely down to 1800fps.I realize you have a challenge shooting an XP,but I bet you would do well if you kept your shot reasonably close.Too bad Sierra stopped making that specialty pistol bullet.

Speer makes a 130g hotcore that is a nice bullet. My son's took 3 deer last year from 30 to about 60 yards with a 7mm08. Velocity was around 2750 bullets preformed great complete pass through on shoulder shots. 3 dead deer one run about 15 yards the rest were drt.

I have shot several whitetails (does) with a 7mm tcu using 120 gr. Nosler BT all drt kills, muzzle velocity was about 2500 fps.
