7mm-300 PRC

I have a Howa 1500 7mm RemMag that I'm looking to rebarrel.
I have an interest in the 7mm-300 PRC.
It would be my first time rebarrelling an action.
First time necking down brass and loading a wildcat cartridge.

Does anyone have experience with this cartridge?
Pros? Cons?

I have a 300WM that is by far my favorite elk rifle.
The Howa is really about the experience.

Actually it is a lot different than the 28 Nosler. The Nosler has a rebated rim like the RUM, the Hornady cartridges do not have a rebated rim. It would basically be the 7mm LRM with the shoulder blown forward about .156"

The 28 nosler case has 101 grains h20 with Nosler brass and 102 with ADG. 300 PRC brass is 97 grains h20 before necking down. There will be a noticeable difference in velocity at pressure(with both throated appropriately) as well as throat erosion.

I'm pretty sure that that's what gun works is done with their 7 mm long range Magnum. Hornady makes brass for gun work in the 7 mm LRM

Anybody doing anything yet with 7mm-300 prc. Sound very interesting.
There are several guys over on Sniper's Hide that have done quite a bit of work on it. There is a very long dedicated thread on it there. They were reporting that they were able to easily duplicate 28 Nosler velocities at lower pressures.

So they are breaking the laws of physics? You can NOT run the same speed as a larger case and get lower pressure if all else is the same. I think a lot of shooters need to go back to high school physics class.

Technically you are correct, but there are other factors at work that effect velocities. Not pure pressure Vs Velocity sport.

Your "wildcat" 7mm-300 PRC is essentially the Gunwerks 7mm LRM.
I think it's still a Gunwerks proprietary cartridge.
I haven't heard of them getting SAAMI approval on it yet.

7mm Rum & 7mm Dakota are also good cartridges to ream a Rem Mag to.
But you'll lose magazine capacity by one cartridge. Plus possibly have to open up the feed rails.

I'd really like to do a 7mm-300RCM.

I have a 7-300 PRC reamer and have built them. They wont out run a 28 nosler, everything else being equal. But may be a better option in some ways. Once you get past the 7 saum/wsm you do start seeing rapid throat wear in the 7mm. The 7-300 prc is much less than a Nosler and is not much farther behind it in speed. Its in the same "ballpark" as the 28 but is a little nicer on barrels. I do like the 7mm and 30 cal versions of the prc case.

So we now have an answer from someone with experience in these rounds. The rules of physics have not been repealed.

Would we be talking just an extra few hundred rounds of accuracy over the 28? I like the idea of this cartridge rather than the .30 cal.

I would say 200 more rounds of barrel life over the 28 Nosler. Alex chambered me one of these. I got some good data on it. 24” barrel shot best with 184’s at 3070 with H1000, 3090 with Retumbo and N570 was 3130. I didn’t stand on it to hard. Wanted to try and conserve barrel life. And 3100 is plenty for me.

Based on the reduction in throat wear I think your about right. I do prefer 30s myself. The 30s will do everything better except recoil. So the point of the 7mm is you can build the rifle lighter and it will still shoot well.
