7mm-08?

Depends on barrel length. Mine is a hunting rifle with a 22" barrel and it is not attainable in my piece. If you have a barrel that is 28" or longer it can be obtained with H-414 or 760, but not much else. A little more info. is required.

QuickLoad says that W760, H414, RL-17 and N550 will do it with a 28 inch barrel, with a little cushion if you throat the chamber so the bullets are at maximum magazine length.

I think everyone with a 7-08 eventually tries to figure out how to run the 162s. The problem is that in order to see any real advantage with the 162 you need to get velocity, and to do that it has to be seated about .150 longer than mag length to get the tail of the bullet out of the case, and to do that you need a throat that is cut really long, and even then you have to single feed.

For hunting there are better options. In real terms inside of 500 yards the 162 doesn't gain you a minute of deer heart over a good 140, and in target shooting the caliber is overshadowed by the 284Win.

I own a 7-08, and I've got a box of 162s with a few missing. When I built the rifle I actually ordered my reamer to be able to shoot the 162s if I wanted to. Now I see that as a mistake (though for a hunting rifle you can't tell it, it's still a half moa rifle with 140s)

If you look at the ballistics at 400 yards, comparing the 140Accubond at 2800FPS (which is easy to achieve from a 24" barrel) and the 162Amax at 2800FPS (which is hard to get), the accubond drops 1.7" more and has 1.7" more wind drift in a 10MPH wind. At 500 yards the difference is still only 3.8" and 4".

If you are shooting at an F class target those differences are legitimate gains, but in anything else it's not worth the trouble, at least in my world.

i load for my sons and myself 3 7-08's with 22 and 24 inch bbl.
The 140s easily go 2875 in the 22 we have and in the 24's the go 2910

thisis 140 nos bt/ 140 sierra sbt's

i use 4064 and i think 4895 would do the same.

I load 140s over H4350 and get 2800 or so with a full case. I may experiment with Varget some this yr and see if I like it better, but 2800 is plenty fast enough.

Ninety+ percent of my hunting shots are inside 200 yards, and the last thing I want is to hit a deer at 50 yards with a bullet going warp 2 that disintegrates w/o penetrating. I've killed deer out to 150 with a muzzle loader, and even at 150 it went all the way through. Two-fifty with a 7-08 is a chip shot. It's not the velocity that kills, it's the hole that lets liquids out and air in.

I have some 140 Accubonds loaded, but for hunting any more I use Sierra 140SGKs. With a 200 yard zero I hold center all the way to 250. Hold .5mil over at 275 and .75 at 300. I have to look at a dope card after that, but I know i can get all the way to 400 with about 1.5 mils. I use a reticle with mil marks (I really like my Swaro BRX). Shooting them is the easy part. Hunting is finding them.

Right about finding 162's!!

But, in my opinion you can't find a better deer bullet than the 162 A-MAX for the 7-08 OR 7X57. My 7X57, loaded with a COL of 3.2", and using RL-17 yields 2700fps. Turns out anything 2650 +/- 100 will expand perfectly in light game like Black tail and probably Muleys and White tail as well. And, at that slightly slower velocity, the ballistics are still better than the lighter bullets so you may be surprised at the minimal drop when sighted at 200 yds. Hey! 162 gn and 2700 fps is more energy than a military 30-06, and the same velocity! The original small ring Mauser shot a 175 gn round nose at slightly over 2000 fps and was deadly! Check out our surprise at San Juan Hill!

Have you ever looked at how much bullet is in the case on a 7-08 loaded to 2.85OAL? It's not conducive to good shooting. The ogive may actually be at the case mouth, and if you're going to shoot a slow 162 from a 7mm why not shoot a 165 from a 308? The 140s give great performance with less recoil and no bother with internal ballistics.

If I want slow with impact I shoot one of my 45-70s or a 50 cal ML.

Or....a 6.5x47L which does this on a constant basis:

A big whitetail, muley, or speed goat can't be killed any quicker than by one of these pills! Ten rounds into this 5" diameter plate from 600 yards.

Used the Hornady 139gr Super Performance ammo in my 24" Rem 700 CDL for hunting. Easily held 1moa at 300yd and MV 2900fps. Terrific ammo and cannot see any reason to reload for it with such excellent ammo available for hunting. Silhouette and competition, yes, but for hunting, Hornady makes it too easy.

Granted, I'm talking about the 7X57, not the 7-08, but I chose the 162 AMAX for two reasons. 1. I have a military barrel with miles of throat. 2. I did a lot of searching on various BB's and found the 162 AMAX has excellent expansion characteristics at moderate velocities, especially in light game like the Black Tails we have here. You have to be careful with a lot of the 140 gn bullets with respect to expansion as a function of M.V. and the animal you are hunting. My option for 140 gn is the Barnes TTSX. Again, both the 162 AMAX and the all metal, long TTSX work well in my military barrel. I use the TTSX for short range pigs and for deer it is the AMAX for its knock down power and ballistics which are better than a 140 gn at a higher velocity.
I see no reason to make heavy loads, I built the 7X57 as it doesn't kick the heck out of you and it will kill any North America game. And at pretty long range as well.

I shoot long range Bench Rest, but I don't feel comfortable shooting game beyond 200-300 yds. And, at that range, the 162 AMAX, I think, is the ticket for non-magnum 7mm's.

I average right over 3000 fps with a 130gr and varget. My barrel is a 26". You can build one on a long action RECIEVER and have all the room you need to seet bullets out especially if you have a barrel throated for them long. I built mine off a 338win mag rifle.

I'm gonna try some 162 bthp in it. I keep the amass for my 7 mag untill they start showing up a bit more again

This ammo was my first choice for my Remmy 7mm08 but when i shot it i couldn't believe my eyes. 3 shot group in about 9". I stopped and started performing an inspection of the rig. I shot plain jane 140 Remington Core Lokts and amazingly all cut the same hole. I am currently shooting Nosler Partitions which are also one holers out of her. I have never saw a gun dislike a bullet this bad in my life.

My Ruger Hawkeye 7mm-08 shoots an honest sub MOA with both the GMX and SST Superformance factory ammo. Strangley they both shoot to the same point of impact in this rifle too.
