Can't go wrong with either round, really. Both superb big game cartridges and very pleasant to shoot.

I have built 2 7 X 57 hunting rifles . One for my grandson from a M-93 Spanish Mauser with a cut down used 7 Rem mag and it shoots better than 1 MOA and is light and mild recoil.
My rifle is a M-98 from BRNO and a WWII surplus 7 X 57 barrel cut down to 24" It too shoots 1 MOA.

Both guns have similar $120 stock blanks.
I figure this bullet will kill any North American game and will easily shoot to long ranges. I use Barnes bullets in each gun with mine loaded to 2800 fps and the Grandson's to 2650 fps.
I mention all this as the 7X57 is very close to the 7-08.

Concerning the three bullets in a 6.5 that did not stop der;

I shot a black tailed deer and a small pig an hour or so later and both dropped in their tracks with a 162 A-MAX at 2800 fps. Such big exit holes I changed to 140 gr TTSX.

I've used a 6.5x47 with 3 different bullets this year on 7 deer. Havn't been satisfied with any, all the deer run off with no blood and not one exit. 11 deer over the last few years with my 7-08 and 162 amax has resulted in 1 deer running off and pass throughs on every one.

If you had deer run off, no blood, no exit wound, then you had terminal impact (i.e. bullet choice) and/or shot placement issues.

Not that this has anything to do with the 6.5x47, 7-08, etc ...*Any* high-powered rifle, with proper bullet selection and a good shot placement, is going to anchor a deer. They just aren’t that hard to kill.

Elk and bear would be a rare occasion so may go with a 6.5 option. I was thinking a 7mm-08 and also building a 6br for target work but could consolidate with the same 6.5 caliber. As far as which option; creedmoor, 6.5x47 or 260, the creedmoor would be the popular choice but always liked the 6.5x47.

Any of them would make fine hunting cartridges. If you want double duty as a paper puncher, the 6.5x47 would be my choice by a hair.
