7mm-06?? not 280

For once you guys are finding out what it's like NOT to have brass, bullets and powder readily available. This is what we deal with all the time over here with the importers generally sending us the leftovers of what couldn't be sold in the US.

I currently shoot a few 7saum's and was nearly in a situation of having 2 brand new rifles and no cases to use in them :-(

This got me thinking about maybe doing a wildcat. They've all been done before and their is always a factory round that duplicates the ballistics but this is more about component availability then anything else.

The requirements are
<Must be able to push a 180gr 7mm at 2900 plus
<brass must be readily available
<case can be formed by necking up or down but does NOT require fire forming

I was thinking something like a 7mm-06 would be about perfect?

From what I understand the 280 is longer in the neck so 7-06 cases wouldn't be an ideal fit in a 280 chamber.

What about dies?

Yes we in the u.k. do have a hard time with brass, bullets and next to no powder, but that's the way it is now,( u guys are very lucky). but u can find 284 win, Lapua brass, lets hope 7mm lapua bullets come in soon at fps2850 with good barrel life have u looked at it ?

P.S. try foxy or spud

Why not just go for one of these http://www.nosler.com/280-remington-ackley-improved? Regards JCS

Because 280 ai brass is very hard to get. In the same league as 7saum brass.

280ai is a great caliber but I'd rather not fire form and from what I understand blowing out 30-06 to 280ai causes the cases to come up short in the neck?

PTG can make a reamer to any specs you want. Let Kiff know you will be necking down Lapua '06 cases or necking up Norma .270 for instance. He will also throat to your specs also. Make it work so you can keep shooting! Good luck.

The shoulder of the .280 was moved forward to prevent firing in a .270. Headspace on the .280 and 7mm-06 are different and they are not interchangeable. Ballistics on the two are the same for all practical purposes. If you can get .30-06 brass your problem is solved. The 7mm-06 Ackley is easily formed by firing a standard round in the improved chamber if you want to go that route.

youse guys are on the rite trak,,,,I got tired of the quality of Rem. brass long time ago,,,decided to go with sumthin using 06 brass and then Lapua played rite into my hand in the 90's when they arrived on the scene with 06 brass !!!,,,,just neck it down to 7mm with your resize die and leave a lil false shoulder and FF with shotgun powder and toilet paper wad ,,,no bullets wasted and NO bbl wear,,,( I have a bbl that has FF'd ~1500 rds and shows NO wear).....Roger
PS,,do the same thing in 30 cal and you have the eqivilent of 30 SAUM/WSM
PSS...call Kiff and ask him for the correct reamer,,,I use .280 AI Redding type S with his dims,,,,,

Silly Guys...270 brass same length as 280 alot easier to find. I built a 6.5 Gibbs years ago as my first long range sniper rifle. Cheap brass and using the 270 gave alittle longer neck over using the 30-06 brass. Just one more thing to look at. Pete

Do you shoot a 7-06 non Ai? What kind of fps or powder charges are you running?

I would probably spec the reamer for lapua 30-06 and run a very tight turn neck chamber.

That way I'd run good quality brass when it's avaliable and then still be able to get a full neck clean up on any other brand.

So if push came to shove I could use. 270 brass by timing to length?

We can get 30-06 and 270 brass of varying qualities at virtual any gun shop.

So standard 280 dies should work even if I had to take a bit off the FL sizer?
