7BRAW re-Visit

with 44-45 grains of powder...yes. Not 40. And by extrapolation.

I was able to get 2475 with a Berger 180 HT and 44 gn of H4350 from a used Rem internet 20" pencil barrel. In my pic above you can see I throated the barrel for the 180. A 7mm-08 typically has a short FB and a 3 degree throat which puts a heavy bullet way back taking up powder space. My COL was 3.115 for this test. This was the whole premise of this experiment I did because most published load data for the 7-08 is at 2.800 COL, so their speeds have to be low compared to what could be achieved in a single shot bench gun, or long action.

There are references (in the Berger loading book for one) that estimate the fps per inch of barrel length and using these estimates I concluded it would feasible to get a 7-08 up to around 2700 (from my observed 2475) with a 30" benchrest barrel. Others commented above they have been able to do so also with actual live fire data.

I hope this clears up any questions - sorry if my conclusions were unclear/misleading.

FWIW - and to the parallel topic you brought up: I am also currently testing with a pre-owned, 1:9.25 twist, 28", long throated 284, HV barrel with radial brake in a 16.5lb bench gun. The 9.25 twist stabilizes 190 Bergers at 2800 fps, 50 degrees and 1100-1200 ft. The SG is pretty low, like 1.3, but the 190s make nice, round holes. It's close to the edge number-wise, though.
