708.

I was thinking the same thing.
Why 284?
To burn 10gr more powder & increase the recoil?
If you wanna push the heavies, 7mm RSAUM, 7mm Rem Mag beat the 284 out.
Why stop there?
7mm Dakota, 7mm RUM, or the mak daddy Lazzeroni 7.21 Firebird.

Sure you gotta replace barrels every 500-700 rounds, but man are they fast!

Maybe we could neck the 408 Cheytec to 7mm? Would be interesting... :D

I wonder what the 7mm version of the Eardrumsplichtenloudenboomen would be called?

I can easily answer "why the 284" part. I can't answer "why not the 7/08" tho. IMO, every cartridge has its place in our world. If it didn't, people wouldn't own them. We're all shooters or hunters obviously. Let's face it, everyone has a favorite cartridge for various endeavors. My 284 is one of and probably my favorite deer rifle for here in my home state over all. The 270,308,7/08,243,260,6.5-284 all come in somewhere behind that first choice. I've used them all and still do if for no other reason but for nostalgia purposes. They've all been in my life growing up in steps for deer cartridges. Once reloading entered my life, obviously changes in cartridges occured. They all still exist and live in my world very actively today. Long live the 7/08. Keep it strong

7-08 is my deer rifle. Personal opinion is that it is under powered for a competition chamber, but it’s great on medium sized game.

I think Jackie shoots SR BR so it would likely be for a 100-200yd BR score gun.
It's hard for me to give anyone on here advice, esp. Jackie! I'm the least of the least, however, if the short game for score is what he is after...I would think the 130 or 150 SMK would be good as well! 130 will go plenty fast in 7-08 AI and I'll promise they are darned sure accurate! Glad you mentioned that! I also saw some good reports where guys built 7 x 47 rifles and were well pleased! Might be pretty good short for score caliber.

Guys, I had a 284 a while back, that is what the BatM and Shehane Stock had in it. I built it specifically to shoot the 180 Berger.

it shot pretty darned good, but in a 17 pound Rifle, it beat me up. At 73 years old, a little too much.

I dabble in Long Range, my main habit is short range Group and Score. But I got this barrel, so.........

My 7-08 AI will run the 180 class Bergers accurately at 2700 - 2740 on RL 16 or H4350, faster on 6.5Stabal as in fast enough to wreck primer pockets. I've been testing with 168 class bullets and can get up into the 2800 -2900+ range before I start running out of room for powder and running into pressure. The accuracy with the 168s seems better down around 2800 anyway.
It's on a Panda action and is competitive at 600 & 1000 yard BR and with a Harrel's radial brake it's pretty mild to shoot. Honestly it's not bad without the brake but has better "bag manners" with it on. With 184 Bergers and RL 16 it finished in the Top 20 score and Top 20 overall HG at the 600 yard Nationals in MN 2019 and helped me place in the Top 20 in Two Gun also.

Tuned realistically it's a viable competitive cartridge. I've thought about the .284 but recoil wise I'm happy with the 7-08 AI

What brass are you using?

Impressive numbers for sure with the 168s. The Ackley really increases performance. Wasn't aware it was that much. That's even a better reason to run a 7/08. Can you run those 168s in a short action ? What's the OAL of the cartridge with 168s ?

I'm going to say a short action on the heavier bullets seated out into the neck not likely in a short action. I'll do some measuring this evening if I get time. It's a bit of a balancing act getting enough getting enough powder in the case on the heavier bullets but doable. If you are running reasonable speeds that is easy on the brass even more so.

6.5Stabal will get more speed than 16 or 4350. It will get enough speed to loosen up the primer pockets on 184s at 2820+ with 16 I was crunching powder over 2720 but the Stabal will get you faster but for me the best accuracy was 2700 +/- on the 184s, the 168s will run up to 2900 but the best accuracy for me has been right around 2800.

I don't remember there being THAT much blood when you shot that 284 in both LG & HG at Mike's fly shoot. That's only like 100 rounds! That said, if you ACE chamber a 708, I bet the extra "straightness" will overcome the ballistic disadvantage vs the 284 ;)

I miss shooting...

Jackie - sell or trade the barrel for a 6mm 8 twist - chamber up a Dasher or BRAI and shoot really well - you won’t get beat up at all

I ask because I built a short action 284 win for the 162 Hornady's. At 2.980 I can run them in a Remington action using DBM and accurate mags. With RL17 I'm around 3000 fps for best accuracy. I'd think the 7/08 with the 160 class bullet may get away with a short action as well. Be interested to find out

If you have mags that'll feed 2.980" COAL rounds from a short action then 7-08/7-08AI will certainly suit with 160-168gn bullets. My 'straight' 7-08 is chambered for the 168gn Berger VLD seated optimally in the case and the ogive just in the lands. That produced a COAL of exactly 2.980" with a new barrel. The COAL with my usual 160gn TMK is a shade under 2.950", or at any rate that was ~15 thou' 'out' with a new barrel. (Might be more jump now after 1,800 + rounds, but it's such a jump-tolerant design I've never changed the seater setting, and won't as long as it keeps shooting as well as it does now.)

The 162gn ELD-M also measures 2.980" when 'in the lands'. I had loaded up batches with a range of COALs from this position to 25 thou' 'out' as a first attempt to see what it liked ...... but then Covid-19 shut down all ranges here. (The 168gn VLD which was what I originally intended to load simply wouldn't group when 10-15 thou' in the lands, or at least wouldn't group in the rifle's usual match set-up. Put a MagnetoSpeed V3 on the barrel though and it shot tiny groups at 100 yards. One day, I'll revisit this one and go through the whole Berger COAL setting and testing regime as it'll apparently shoot well at one setting or another.)
