700 New extractor or fishing weight?

I would replace bolt with one that fits better than the old one, replace bolt handle to correct timing, this bolt has been bugger up to much already, no telling how much is already gone on the front, let alone the face of bolt where the cartridge rides, now maybe too much firing pin protrusion? I would want to check head space too, prior to doing anything.

DickE,
You say below you just spent $740 fixing another gunsmith's mistakes. I'm sure you can run up a bill like that quickly with your suggestions.

A new bolt from PTG is about $300, plus extractor, bolt knob, and that assumes you move the firing pin and ejector from the old bolt.

I don't know what you're going to charge to install it but I'm sure it isn't free. Sometimes the fall right in. I just installed on this past week that took me 2 hours to fit it.

Now you have to adjust the headspace of the barrel. Since you don't have a reamer you are going to have to play with the shoulder and other surfaces. If the headspace is too short rather than too long, then you're going to have to replace the recoil lug.

Looks to me like you've just suggested a $740 fix to this rifle.

Tell me this, when you install an M-16 style extractor what diameter do you bore the bolt to before soldering in your Cr-Mo ring?

Time the bolt handle, the customer would like that.
Head space new bolt by cutting correct amount off back of bolt recoil lugs, they are made longer than a Remington bolt

Dick, Do you time bolt handles? I freqently get contacted by people looking for someone to time a bolt handle. should I send them to you? What do you charge? --Jerry

Yes, but I would prefer people going to Dan Armstrong at accu-Tig, or Nathan Dagley at Straight Shot Gunsmithing, and many others on this site. I braze handles back on, where Dan and Nathan TIG weld them in place, which I feel is a superior method. I am retired and do this as a break even hobby. I do not depend on this to make a living. 90% of what I do is repeat projects for friends on new projects. Have more than enough work, Thank You.

First it's easily fixed. Many can install an M-16 or Sako extractors. Dan can't. So that leaves Carlsbad, Gre-Tan, LRI and a hundred others I've never heard of. No need to complicate things with a new bolt.

Thread definitely got off the rails. Thought maybe I had someone I could send work too (I have more than I want) but it didn't pan out. --Jerry

Next time I'll just keep my mouth shut. Just trying to suggest alternative ways. The $740.00 bill was for two barrel set backs( ordered 2 new JGS reamers) plus 4 trips to the range, trigger job, truing receiver face, Recrowning, trigger timing to no cock on close, plus more. Yes fellas, I have learned something here.

DickE,
I'll admit I didn't like the way you posted that in response to my post. I've never had a customer complain about my work and if he did, I'd fix it myself or buy him a new one rather than having him pay someone else to do it. You didn't answer my question about installing an M-16 extractor making me think you've never installed one. So I agree that keeping your mouth shut would have been a good idea. --Jerry

While I can put a sako extractor in it and fix the extractor, I always hate it when I get a bolt in that someone else has worked on the face. they often are no longer perpendicular. I charge for a sako/M-15 extractor about what you can pick up an used/new bolt in good condition for. Your choice.
