new to site. have a spare 700 long action laying around that has been tured. looking to build a 600-1000 yd gun. any ideas?

Gotta agree with Raptor on his choice of cartridges. I built myself a straight 284 on a long 700 a couple of years ago, and have had very good results with it in any/any 1000yd. prone matches using Berger & JLK 180 VLDs. If you don't mind fireforming, the 280 Ackley Imp. would also be an excellent choice. I use 30" 9-twist bbls. on my 284s, which do an excellent job with the 180s at 2800-2900fps.
If you want something with less recoil but excellent LR ballistics, a 6.5x55 is also a good choice. In a modern action like the 700, you should be able to push 142s a little over 2900fps out of a 30" bbl.
