700 bolt bush for small firing pin

Other gunsmiths that send them Greg ;). Just curious why not use him, his price, work and turn around has always been good I thought

.062" diameter firing pins are not the cure all & will break.

.075" std diameter pins will last a couple life times w/o issues!

I had a 6.5x47 bbl put on a Rem 700 PSS that pierced primers at very low powder charges,,the gre-tan bush and turn job sure cured that,,I can now run the Rem as hard as I was the Stiller,,

I simply can't see any reason why the firing pin couldn't be bigger then .062 (Gretan work), it's not so much the size of the pin tip, but the close tolerances created by bushing, my opinion.
I have one right now that I do have to send to them because the tolerances are way to large and it craters badly.
If I'm wrong please explain what you think.

The larger the diameter of the pin the easier it is for the primer cup to push the pin back and flow into the hole. That being said, I dont think there is a problem with a .075" pin, nor is a little catering the end of the world.

Stiller did a study and published his result. I do believe the pin to pin hole clearance as well as pin shape makes a difference.

this is my only experience with this situation,,,I had a Bartlien bbl chambered for 6.5x47 and fitted to a Stiller Tac 30 action and shot the crap out of it,,,at 2500 rounds I had it set back and chambered with same reamer and fitted to a 700PSS action,,

the load is a healthy dose of H4350 and the 130 VLD

first 2 cases on left are from when the bbl was on Stiller action,,the middle 2 are from the 700 action with factory bolt and the right 2 cases are after the Gre-tan bush job,,,

I'm reasonably sure that a lot of people have had Gretan bush and reduce the size of their pin's (.062) on larger cartridges like 7mm and 30-06 size cases that use large primers.
If so, has any ignition problems been noticed are heard of? Just wondering about this situation while we are still on the pin size topic.

No, if anything it should help. The smaller diameter will have more energy for its size.

I have put the 308 factory bbl back on the 700PSS action I had the bush job done on and shooting the 155 AMax and IMR8208XBR and was able to run the next node up at 2905 fps with really good ES numbers,,I was running them at 2840 with some cratering but now the 2905 load the primers look really good,,

that is one thing about this mod ,you cant really use how your primers look for pressure signs,,now with this action/bolt I mainly use bolt lift as my main pressure indicator,,

you can see from these pics how tight the pin is in the hole,

I cant think of any downside from doing this to your bolt

Thanks for the pics, they really do a nice job (Gre-tan).

It appears your bolt face has been turned, did Gre-tan do this when they bushed the bolt? Turning the bolt face would change your head space.
