700 action

a lot of hunters that are hunting with magnum calibers out to 750 yards to 1000 yards.
I don't mean to be offensive but a lot of them doing it does not make it right. After I was thoroughly humiliated at a 1000 yard match, I spent a lot of time getting familiar with how long it takes a bullet to go 1000 yards and how far just a gentle breeze can move them. (Check out JBM Ballistics) An animal can move a long ways in second and a puff a wind at just the moment you shoot can turn a lung shot into a gut shot. No telling how many animals are missed or wounded for every youtube depicting a perfect one shot kill. JMHO

I haven't hunted in many years. Most of the hunters I know have a full understanding of the time of flight and only take such shots when conditions are right. A shot from as little as 100 yards can be affected by an animals movement.
While I know hunters that have taken these long shots, they are not the norm. 300 to 500 are more the norm in many areas.
I did not make my post to get into a hunting debate. I did so to point out that making a rifle as accurate as possible is every bit as important for hunters as competitors within reason.
If you don't agree that is your right, I just don't agree.

I'd say I got off topic. I apologize. I'll say this, if one wanted to have their action "trued", I'd say its best to let the 'Smith building the rifle do it. I seriously doubt I'll ever have another one done, because @butchlambert is very convincing.

You know Butch, that 600 is truly a custom action. Those other actions are just "high end actions".
It's kind of like taking your middle of the road Mustang, install better engine, adding headers, twin turbos, super shocks, upgraded tires and wheels, new handling package and stabilizing bars. That's custom, or you could have just bought the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and be done with it, Both have a level of pride, but in my opinion the one you built has the greatest pride.
But that's just me

Could not agree more. Long range and hunting should not be used in the same sentence. It's an oxymoron used by morons.

I agree with linebaugh. It`s what many morons do.
Very few hunters have a lazer rangefinder, a spotter, the training of a military sniper, are know what the wind is doing down range. How many of us really know how long that bullet is hanging in the air? How far did the earth spin while it was flying, and how much drop is there between 600 and 650 yards? Seems like uphill and downhill shooting also makes a difference. They like to brag about killing their animal at x number of yards. Do they ever mention the ones that were wounded and ran off, never to be seen again? Probably not.

That's my opinion for what it`s worth.

For example, I have that many double rifles. All about 2moa. I own very, very few factory bolt action rifles. I am more of a DST Mauser 98 or OM 70 as a basis for customs.
I have been fortunate enough to make three trips to Africa hunting. None of the animals I harvested could have told the difference between a 1/4moa grouping rifle, and the 1&1/4moa bolt guns I took. Out of the harvest, only Elephant and Cape Buffalo needed more than one shot.

I tried simple once, there are too many types of game/competition/recreation shootg; to limit yourself to one, or a few rifles. My Sharps .45-100 would fail miserably at BR, I would likely get a second round of black powder/lead bullet before my AR-10 quit functioning. Besides, where would be the fun; compared to spending six months comparing blanks of fine walnut, and choosing a caliber that would be optimal for one task?

For me, part of the fun is accumulating the pieces and parts as my budget allows...

A fully blue printed 700 action can be made to shoot just as accurately as a custom action. I have 2 that Greg Tannel did for me that have proven it. But the 700 action will not be as smooth as a custom action. If you already have a good action I believe it's worth doing a complete truing for a hunting rifle. We like our hunting rifles to be as accurate as possible with every small detail making a difference. My favorite hunting rifle is a 30-06 built by Greg Tannel using a fully blue printed 700 action.

I would like to add, there are Smith's like Greg Tannel that will do a proper blueprint job then there are some that will "blueprint" your action. Not to say only a few people know how to do it, but I know of a few personally that I would consider the action worse off or garbage after their work.

Attention to detail and pride in your work.
