700 223 extraction problem

I have a standard Remington 700 223 that inconsistently extracts / ejects the cartridge after firing. It does not seem to be brass make dependent.

Its about an even split; 1/3 or less of the time it stays in the chamber, 1/3 or more of the time it pulls from the chamber and drops on the follower after firing, the remainder it ejects.
I can t see any obvious issues with misalignment, or funny marks on the brass that would lead me to something to work on.

Has anybody had this similar issue and solved it, and how?

The gun shoots great, feeds great.

Thanks for the help!

Sounds like time for a new extractor to me......
If you or someone close to you has a bolt with the same face, you can check and see if it will do a better job than the one you have...

Sounds like the whole bolt head could use some help, the extractor to the ejector spring. Could have had some hot gas blow back at one time that has soften some of the temper in the springs. Maybe?

Have you tried Lapua brass?

My 700 .223 would always extract Winchester brass but would rarely eject it. With Lapua, it extracts and ejects 100% of the time. I think it has to do with the rim thickness and the gap to the extraction claw. Never actually figured out why it wouldn't ejected Winchester brass. Now I only use Lapua brass with this rifle...problem not fixed but solved.

OP,
Is this action/rifle an AL assembled late production RR prefix serial numbered receiver?

Remove the ejector spring & measure the length.
Shorten the ejector spring by 1/8"
Reinstall
Shoot

Nat,I won't bet ya!

One other thing to do. Clean the bolt face of brass shavings. 223's are the worst for shaving brass off the rim. That means a brush and air to blow out the shavings.

Well isn't it safer to explain that ? What would of happened if the next bolt he tried had less headspace? I'll tell you what , a stuck case or cartridge . What if your unspecific comment was taken as try another bolt , shoot it , after all it's after he shoots it that he's having occasional problems , and he had excessive headspace ?
Let's keep the suggestions safe ! Explain yourself to avoid accidents .

Any one with half a brain already knows that you should't shoot a rifle with a different bolt unless the headspace has been checked..
All I mentioned was to try a different bolt to see it that was the problem, figured the OP knew better than to use a loaded case to check it out..
I'll try to explain that better next time, sure don't want to cause a accident !!!!
Never knew less headspace would cause a stuck case, us old guys learn something new everyday!!

1 you assumed he knew better
2 I doubt his problem is when he extracts unfired rounds
3 you suggestion would be only useful if he had problems extracting unfired rounds and again headspace would need to be correct to establish even that !

LETS KEEP IT SAFE AND NOT ASSUME !
We all make comments that should be more specific .

I've never had either of my 700's in 223 fail to eject, but the one was had an issue where it was hard to close the bolt on a rd. A local smith fixed it in 15 seconds by touching up the extractor with a dremel. Both of mine are born in the 2000's if that matters.

We cannot "assume" anything these days, with all the new shooters out there. We can "assume" all have a bit of 'know how' and common sense, but this 'mis-information super hywy' has over simplified much. (Please don't ask me how I know this)

Yes and I apologized . I hope all can forgive my remarks . They were not intended to sound the way they printed . I did want to make a statement about newbies maybe not understanding and thus creating an unsafe situation.

Gary I wasn't just talking about you at all. You can go all over this site and there are a few guys that like to put down work by others or just start pissing matches. Its kinda crazy
