7 SAUM barrel life?

Does anyone known the barrel life for competition shooting, F class.

I have been reading the feature on 7 SAUM,http://www.6mmbr.com/7mm284.html#7SAUM, and this looks like a good alternative to the 7WSM, and while it says it should have a better barrel life there aren't any predictions. Can anyone here make a logical guess, or has anyone here shot a barrel out yet?

I currently run a 7WSM and can get the 180 Berger to 3100 fps, the downside being not able to practise much due to a short barrel life (800-1000?) and have decided to have a .284 Shehane built so I can practise in between competitions.

I think if the SAUM could last for 1400 rounds then this might be a better option at a later date.

You should get about 1500 with the 7 mm RSAUM from what I hear. My 284 Shehane has 1920 rounds through it and it still holds 10 ring vertical at 1000 yards!

Many thanks Erik, food for thought for a later date.

How are the RSAUM holding up in competition against the other 7's?

Danny Biggs just won the Southwest Nationals in Phoenix with his 7mm rsaum and the barrel has over 1500 rounds on it. He set the new 1000 yard f-open world record with 200-15x, and he did it twice. Once on Saturday with mild conditions, and again on Sunday with harder conditions.

That is true about Danny Biggs and his 7mm RSAUM.

First and second place at the SW LR Nationals were shooting 7mm RSAUM's, third place was shooting a 284 Shehane.

7 saum seems to be the hot flavor now. I got one in the works as to keep up with the crowd. ::)

Sure is expensive swapping calibers though. I've been 308, 6.5-284, now 7 saum.

Breaking me up I tell ya.

ETA- Danny Biggs is the one that convenced me last summer to go 7 saum.

I talked to several people at the Phoenix match that were experiencing shot out barrel characteristics at 400-600 rounds with the 7 rsaum's

Jeff,
Mine was one of them, had 650 rounds through the barrel and it seemed to be shot out. The problem was copper fouling in the last 5 or 6 inches of barrel. I had been cleaning the barrel like it was a Palma barrel (wrong) it need to be brushed and brushed. It took two days of cleaning to remove the copper. I will change my cleaning procedure for the 7 SAUM.

yes a friend and i have experienced the same thing with the 7SAUM. the copper seems to build up near the muzzle not in the throat! i allways inspect with a torch and a Q tip at the muzzle to make shure all the copper is removed.

Jerry,
yes you were one of those I talked to, another had app. 400 rds on his and the throat had moved .100" or so.

Would you have to load your ammo progressively longer, base to ogive wise, in the ammo box to keep bullet/lands relationship the same. At the rate you were saying. If I loaded them 15 thousandths into the lands at the end of the day I would be off the lands. Four 20 shot relays. Sounds like a heck of alot of throat erosion. Is anybody else having that problem with the throat. My straight 284 has only eroded .005 after 400 rounds, shooting 180 at 2895. If someone could get a hold of Danny and ask him how much his throat has moved after 1500 rounds that would be nice. Just out of curiousity cause Im currently scrapping money together to build a saum.
