7 SAUM and 162 eldm 500 yards

Nice morning, 57F, slight 3 mph crosswind. This won't interest those shooting 20 shot strings on hot days, but you can't knock the accuracy. An agg of 1.33 at 500 yds ain't shabby and could have been better if some of you guys were the shooter. I've tried hard to blow up 147's and 162's the last couple of years and has not happened yet and probably won't with 5 shot strings and 6-7 min in between. With 500 down the tube, these aggs have been repeated over and over with 162 bullet. Groups open up with 180 hyb and vld. 012.JPG At 3050 fps and H1000, it will shoot inside of 284 and 180 hyb at 2850 and does a pretty good job when 180 is at 2950. Both bullets having close to same BC. Wondering when Hornady will start looking at thicker jackets???

Great shooting sir..
Have you managed to blow up any 7mm 180gr ELD match bullets..??
Did you shoot the 162gr amaxs before the 162gr ELDM's came out.
I had my best ever 100yds 3 shot group with the 162gr amaxs in my 7mm saum..
I've only been using the ones I had left as barrel foulers

Thank you.....I have not, but have only shot about 70 or so. They did not group like 180 Ber or 162. That could have been due to twist rate or my shooting. The 162 shoots well in both saum and 7-08. It is very accurate. However, no problems with any eldm's.

The 180gr ELDM's like just touch in my saum and my 284.
I've had 3 blank targets in the last 2
f open shoots with the 180gr ELDM's.
Not using them anymore..
They were running about 2960fps on 63.6grs of H1000. Very accurate but I can't trust them anymore I'm affraid..
Sticking with the 184gr hybrids from now on as they shoot really good...

Yes sir, I know what you mean. 20 shot strings is a killer!

My best group target was shot through 30 inch a 1 in 9 twist bartlein..
Not too shabby seeing it was a load I threw together that was purely for barrel fouling lol.
Round count at 1400 at the time..
It's done about 1630 shots now..
I was wondering if there was any wear in the barrel may have caused the 180gr ELDM's to not make the target..
A gunsmith looked through my barrel at about 1450 shots and said there was only a tiny bit of longitudinal fire cracking and could be good for another 500 shots at top accuracy..
I'm nearly through all my H1000 I'd bought to see the barrel out..
We cannot get anymore H1000 and most of the Hodgdon range in the UK now as it's not reach compliant..
Its to do with cancerous stuff being in the powder so say....
N165 is our main alternative..

I think many would vote for N165. What I see with lighter bullets is H4831sc is also a good option. Shooting 5 shot groups barrel life on my stuff is incredible. I have two 6.5 x 284's and 2,000 rds is no problem. I hear about those in 1,000 yd competition and 20 shot strings that trash barrels in 800-1,000 rds. Never been my problem! Back to H1000....its been a good powder for me with 7 saum....I might also try N165. In other calibers VV powders have worked out great! I'm a big fan!

N165 and N160 are good for low ES figures.
Vihtravori have now brought out N565 which is ment to be very temperature stable if you prefer high energy powders..
My N165 with 184gr hybrid is doing 2942fps in 60f with an ES of 6fps and it shoots great...
We shoot in pairs nearly all the time..
Alternate shots....
There's only one comp Ive shot in called the topgun competition that has a string shoot which is the final stage called the iceman. It's a unlimited siters and 20 to count and 30 minutes to get your shots in so the barrel will get pretty hot..
It was cancelled this year due to a storm that blew through..
It's rescheduled for October as it's the neatest available time.. A long way on from mid February.....

What accuracy are you getting at 1000yds with the 162gr ELDM's...??
I'm currently testing 162gr ELDX's in my 284 for hunting and my initial tests didn't go very well...
