7 PRC shell holder numbers

You would think if they make the dies for a cartridge they would list the shell holder on their chart....

Doesn't the label on the die box tell you the shell holder?

The die my grandson bought was a Hornady. He bought a Hornady shell holder with it. The primer seating channel in the die is way out if spec. Trying to get a RCBS which I have never had a problem with. Thank for the suggestion, I'm sure you meant well.

The parent case is a 300 PRC, that's a 38 shell holder:

This doesn’t make sense. It’s a 0.532 base just like a belted magnum. The 300RCM is the same case design, and calls for #4 on their chart. The #38 is listed for 28 Nosler and ultra mag cases. Something appears to be off with the chart.

If you ignore the chart, the product page for the 38, which I linked to, it specifically lists the 300 PRC.

If something is off, it's in the chart and the product page.

If the 300 PRC's parent is the 375 Ruger, and the 375 is a #4, then I'd agree, it is confusing.

I’m not sure what the difference is between their #4 and #38. I couldn’t find any info. I looked through the RCBS charts, and it now lists the 6.5 PRC as #38 along with the 300 PRC. However, it lists a #4 for the 375 Ruger, 338 RCM and 300 RCM. All 5 of these, are based off of the same case design. Then they list many other cases to use either of these 2 shell holders. Maybe there’s a slight change for extractor groove.

It was just a few thousandth's tight where the extractor groove enters the shell holder. I opened it up about 0.004" using a small round India stone to open it up. Mine was from the late 60's so newer ones may not have the same issue as mine.
I have been using a newer #4, and it seems to work fine. That being said, I have a #38 coming

On this shell holder chart on loaddevelopment, they list it as a #38 for RCBS for the 300prc and the 7mm prc, but on the 6.5 prc it shows that the #4 and the #38 will work, I have both, and both work on my 6.5 saum, so I am sure both with work with all the PRC variants.
