7 MM SAUM - SHORT CHAMBER & NECK TURNING

HI. I NEED SOME HELP. I HAVE RELOADED FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS ON AND OFF, MOSTLY TO TWEAK MY HUNTING LOADS. I HAVE A SINGLE MODEL 7 REMINGTON SAUM THAT I JUST TRIED (UNSUCCESSFULLY) TO RELOAD. THE ONE RIFLE AND THE BRASS FROM IT START OUT AS ONCE FIRED AND ARE TRIMMED FROM 2.033" TO 2.025". THE RIFLE NORMALLY SHOOTS REMINGTON FACTORY LOADS 160 NP INTO 3/4 INCH OR LESS GROUPS AT 100 YDS. THE FACTORY LOADS COL MEASURE 2.744".

THE CASES ARE FULL LENGTH RESIZED AND PREPPED, PRIMER POCKETS REAMED AND SORTED BY NECK THICKNESS. I AM USING RCBS 2 DIE SET TO SEAT AND THEN CRIMP THE BULLETS. HERE IS THE PROBLEM:THE HORNADY 154 GRAIN SST'S ARE NOT HELD IN THE NECK TIGHT ENOUGH TO FIRST SEAT AND THEN CRIMP. IN FACT, THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE. I NEED TO CRIMP AND SEAT AN UNPRIMED PROTOTYPE CARTRIDGE TO GET THE DIE SET UP. WHILE THE RECOMMENDED COL FOR THIS LOAD IS 2.800 TO 2.825" , THEY WILL NOT FEED IN THE RIFLE. TO MAKE CASES SIMILAR TO THE FACTORY LOADS, THE SHORTER LOADS RESULT IN THE CRIMP MISSING THE CANNELURE ON THE BULLET. DUE TO THE TAPER, THE BULLET EITHER FALLS INTO THE CASE, OR STICKS IN THE BULLET SEATER PLUG.
I CAN INSERT RESIZED CASES INTO THE CHAMBER AND THEY FIT FINE. HOWEVER, ONCE A BULLET IS INSERTED, THE NECK GOES FROM 0.320 TO 0.322" AND THEY NO LONGER CHAMBER.

ANY ADVICE AT THIS POINT WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

First what Dans40x said. Forget the crimp. Next your neck measurements sound off to me. I trim my cases necks for competion so don't have any untrimmed cases to measure, but I Don't remember any of the three brands of 7 SAUM being any thicker than .016 which would give a loaded neck diameter of .316. My factory 7 WSM loaded rounds measure .315 and a fired case measures .322. I recommend some better measuring tools and think about a (replaceable neck bushing) Full length sizing die, that way you can control the neck pressure when seating your bullets. It sounds as if you are not getting any. Mike

Have you measured your bullet diameter? If that checks out okay, I would try sizing a case with the expander removed and see if it will hold a bullet. If it will, you have the wrong expander ball or it's oversize.

THANKS, I RESIZED 20 CASES AGAIN. ITS ALL GOOD. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH I HAD THE DECAPPING PIN DOWN TOO FAR, AND ALL THAT HAPPENED WAS THE PRIMER GOT KNOCKED OUT WITHOUT RESIZING.
