7 mm remington magnum

will the 7 mm rem mag fit into a savage 110 long action? thanks guys, brian

by the way, anyone havr this cartridge and like it? dislike? brian

I've had four different rifles chambered for the 7mm Rem mag over the years and have successfully taken game from coyotes through trophy bull elk with the 7mm Rem mag. It is one of my all-time favorite hunting cartridges.

Other than having a silly, essentially useless, belt, there is nothing I dislike about the cartridge. It seems to be a very nice mix of velocity, good bullets, and relatively easy recoil. In general I prefer the 160 - 175 grain bullets loaded over stout charges of Reloader 22 or H4831.

A 24" barrel seems to be about the minimum for achieving high velocity, and I found that a 26" barrel is a good thing too. I have no hesitation in taking a good 7mm Rem mag for any big game hunting in North America, except maybe for the great bears. The penetration of a 175 gr Nosler Partition is superb. That's the bullet I took my bull elk with.

Regards, Guy

The 7mm Remington magnum will work fine in a Savage 110 long action. If your Savage action is not a magnum you will have to change the standard bolt head for a magnum bolt head. You'll also need a magnum follower and magazine box. All of the above are inexpensive and easy to do.

wheres the best place to get the mag box and follower? can the old ones be made to work, or is it just better to replace? thanks brian

You can call Savage @,413)568-7001 and order these parts directly. Follower - # 102981, Magazine box - # 100192

or -

You can order them from Brownells. Their part numbers are -
Follower - # 855-000-200, Magazine box - # 855-000-042

The profile of the follower is different because of the fatter diameter of the magnum round. I've never tried modifying one, it just doesn't seem like it's worth the effort as a new one only costs around $6.00. You might be able to tweak the feed lips of the standard magazine box to accept the wider magnum rounds, but again, why bother as a magnum magazine box is only about $10.00.

An advantage to buying the correct new parts is that by retaining the old ones you can easily convert the action back to the standard round when it suits you at no expense.
