savage sporter actions.

i was at their site, and saw that they have target actions for sale. when i cliked on the target actions, a list came up. i see that they have a sporter action, and it says:

http://savagearms.com/TA_223_Bolt.htm

"Sporter Actions Carbon Steel, Standard, Magnum, 223 or WSM bolt head"

does the magnum mean that i can get an action to take a 7mm rem mag?

are these good actions? ,i.e. pretty much blueprinted... to a point)

i am not looking for a benchrest rifle, but i do want a rifle that will achieve very good long range accuracy, and i know that savages can be built to be very accurate.

would it be better to buy a used savage rifle, and have it blueprinted, or is this a good way to go. i have a used bench rest barrel that i can turn into, and counture down, to a 7mm mag barrel, and it will have a finish lenght of 26", so i should get decent velocity out of it.

how does the sporter action differ from the other savage actions... like the 110 long action... man... i wish that they made a target action in a length that would accept a cartridge length of the 7mm rem mag... do they??

thanks for everything, brian

thanks guys, brian

The target actions are built with a little more precision than the standard actions. Since the action is a single shot, you can probably get a 7mm Mag to fit into it.

But that being said, most Savage actions are "good" actions, and blueprinting a Savage has marginal value. This is primarily because of two features: the "Ma Deuce" style barrel nut system, and the floating bolt head.

The barrel nut system allows the owner to control the chamber length relative to headspace. I typically get my best accuracy with my Savage when I set it up so that when I chamber a round, I get a slight "crush fit". The floating bolt head is very forgiving with respect to breech geometry.

It is not uncommon to see run-of-the-mill Savage hunting rifles turn in a 1/4 moa group for three shots. My varmint weight 300WM Savage long action, actually a Stevens 200) shoots under one inch at 200 yards all day long. Of course, it is bedded and has an aftermarket barrel on it. I did no work on the action, although I worked the rear of the bolt over a little.

So, if you can get past the ugliness, go for it. You won't be sorry. Sharp Shooter Supplies has Kreiger pre-fit barrels and all the tools you need to assemble it yourself.

ya think?!? the target actions are only availible in .223, so wouldnt that make it to short of a bolt length to be able to extract the empty cartridge? i dont know, it would be awsome to make work. i would jump all over it.

tell me, do you know if the bolt head on the target actions are the same as the 110's... i.e. replaceable... if so, i actually have a magnum bolt head that i could switch out.

if the port is long enough to egect the empty, and the bolt heas can be swapped, i think ill be in buisness.

oh, where can i find these barrels you speak of...

thanks, brian

ADDEd.... would it be more fessable to use one of these actions to build a 7mm WSM instead of 7mm rem mag? as long as the bolt had can be switched...

and where can i find savage stocks to fit the target action....

Bolt heads are easy to swap. Takes about 5 minutes with ordinary household tools. I don't know how long the port is, so I am not sure the brass on a 7mm RM will eject properly. You can ask over on the savageshooters.com forum.

The port length on my LRPV is 3.040",so ejecting an empty 7mmRM case shouldnt be a problem.SSS or Northland should have what you need for the mag bolt head.

anyone know the differance between the savage target action, varmite action and sporter action. anyone also know where i can find pics of these actions???

The target actions are single shot and have a small port, either on the left or right. They also have 3 main action screws.
The varmint actions are SS repeaters with a standard right port, using a detachable box magazine.
The sporter actions are blued repeaters using the hinged floorplate. They are availble in short and long action.

Target action is the newer three screw small ejection port action used on the F-class and LRPV rifles.

Sporter action is the model 10/110 style blued action.

Varmint action is the model 12 style stainless action.

You can buy used Savage rifles for $200. I've got several Savages that I built without having any work done to the action and they all shoot well. I wish they made a long target action also.

200.00$ sounds good!!!! i like the lok of the target action, and i think it would be a pretty good action to center a build around. but, with the varmite action, i could save a couple bucks, but... i wouldnt be able to use it for the 7 rem mag. i mean, i could use it as a single shot, but that would make the mag. useless. mine-as well go with the single shot action. i could go with the 7mm wsm, and still fit the mag though. man... this is hard...i like the idea of the repeater, because it would be a little better for hunting as well. but, i know that the 7mm rem mag is better for the use of heavier bullets. ahhm, the choices... now, just to make the right one!

any suggestions. rifle would be used for paper punching, and maybe hunting.

thats awsome, thanks alot. wrote SSS to see what he thought about using the target action with the 7mm rem mag, so i am just waiting back to hear from him. i know he knows his stuff when it comes to the savage rifle. thanks again,

brian

got to thinking...,i know, bad...):) i have read a couple articles that talk about "switchbarrel" rifles... hummmmmmmm.....

i already have a pre-accutrigger 110 action that currently has a .308 savage heavy conture barrel on it. this got me thinking to maybe make one of these switchbarrel rifles. i already have the 110 action, and all i would need would be another bolt.,i know that the heads are interchangable, but i think it would be faster with another bolt.)

i think i might go this way.

maybe i can get a picitiny scope base and some detachable rings for two differnt scopes.

what do you guys think of going this way? any suggestions?

i think it would save money in not having to buy another action...

I have barrels and bolts for the following:

25-06
270 Win
30-06
300 WM

I highly recommend that you invest in a quality action wrench in addition to a barrel nut wrench. Some people use a barrel vise, but I think that an action wrench puts less stress on the system, and it is easier on the finish.

i think its a good idea. it will allow me to buy more ammo, then just look at them in the safe :)

how do you adjust headspace. do you have sholdered barrels, or do you just headspace them everytime you switch a barrel?

i want to be able to use 1 or two scopes for the rifle, and i thought you would have to remove the scope to use the action wrench? right??

thank you, brian

I bought the barrel wrench but made an action clamp to put in a vise. Its a square chunk of 1" steel I drilled with a hole saw, chopped in half with a chop saw and glued thick gasket material into each half of the hole.In one half I drilled a 1/4" hole and installed a bolt for the recoil lug to come up against.Yes,I ended up taking the scope, rings and base off for the barrel change.I wont tell you its a right way to do it,or even recommend it,but I headspaced off a new case of the brass I always shoot.I adjusted it to the point where I can feel a very slight crush on the case when closing the bolt.I know its headspaced tighter than the original factory barrel. My only concern is that I try to neck size only as much as possible,so when it comes time to bump the shoulder Im not sure what kind of fiascal Im in for.Hopefully just milling a shellholder.
I also hope Savage will do a long version of thier target action in the future also.
