7-LRM Versus ,,,? (Wildcatting & 300-PRC)

I'd like to take a look at Three similar 7mm's: 7-300 PRC, 7 RemMag-AI & 280 NEWTON Improved. Why? 7mm Remington Magnum Brass is VERY available. So much in fact you can order High Quality Brass despite it's Belt. With Norma & RWS 8x68S Brass, once again it's easy to create the .280-Newton. Hornady 300 PRC brass is hitting shelves soon, now 7mm-300 PRC is a reality. 300 PRC Brass offers more Capacity than 7mm-LRM. Cost is a Huge Factor & the reasoning behind limiting the Selection to these Three types of Brass, they are Cheap! Whether you shoot 180's or 195's these Options offer 2900-3100 FPS performance on a Budget Without Wasting Excess Propellant. Yet Each Option has drawbacks that deserve consideration.

8X68S = 7BooBoo 30' tight neck or 7MM Tooley 35' shoulder
I've never seen cheap RWS brass but if you calculate it by cost per shot it's a good value.

With those exact 3 choices, if your reloading anyway and don't mind a wildcat, the 280 Newton AI, or talk with Dave about his BooBoo version of the case which is a more interesting design.

You burn less powder then the PRC/LRM to achieve the same thing, if that's the velocity range your looking for. And you have brass of much higher quality that will last a long time.

The 30 Newton (non belted version) was based on the 8x68S case slightly modified, and the 280 Newton was made from necking down the 30 version. The AI i'm not familiar with though.

The RWS brass is top quality and the 8x68S case is really robust and lasts a long time, if your not looking at cost per shot as mentioned, the cases themselves are rather expensive. Over here they costs about 40$ pr pack of 20.


The 7 LRM and 300 PRC will have only Hornady brass available, and you won't find much loaded ammunition for them anyway.

The 7 RM is still the same old belted case, with it's drawbacks, and with a short neck.
And even the Norma brass is still far from as good as RWS 8X68S.
It's advantage is obviously widely available factory ammunition, and you will always be able to find brass from multiple sources pretty much.

We're right in that same ballpark here in the US, with Huntington's supplying RWS 8x68 @ $43.98/20 and 6.5x68 @ $40.98/20.

I'm using both currently for a couple of wildcat cases and some of the 8x68 for a rifle all by itself.

I have good luck with Ruger 375 brass in both its parent form, well under 1 MOA at 100 yards with Barnes tipped, on multiple days. I also built a 30-375 Ruger and have good luck with that maintaining 1 MOA at 1,000 with a 22" barrel. I got 1 MOA only after annelaing new brass i the 375 Ruger. I would give a 7-375 Ruger try if I wanted a heavy 7 except the 280 Nosler is already there, so die and reamer cost is less, load data is readily available.
