Howdy !

It’s really encouraging to read technical information such as you provided, from someone out on the “ leading edge “, who helps set standards; and show others the way forward !

Thanx so much for you tireless contributions to our shooting sports !

Please do keep it up !

I am fairly chomping at the bit, to receive my new Bartlein .224” cal “ gain twist !

Thanks for buying the 224cal stick!

Here are some pic's of the box Hornady ammo that was made. If I recall correclty and it's been a while... think they only made one run of it. I think they ran something like a 100k rounds or so.

If you note on the box label that shows the velocity. It's shown as 2265fps. The original ammo spec. was 2100fps. I/we don't know what test barrel was made back in the 1940's and the finish length etc... also keep in mind that the velocity listed at 2265fps was taken from a 20" finish length test barrel. We did a 20" for a few different reasons. One it was in between the 16" finish and 24" finish lengths (a K98k rifle barrel is 23.5" finish). So if you would go longer... might gain a little velocity or if the barrel is shorter in length you will lose a little. So the 2265fps out of a 20" barrel and if you would chop it down to the 16.25" finish length on the MP44 series of guns.... most likely it would be right at 2100fps.

The pressure test barrel was a .311" bore x .323" groove. Did a 1-10 twist. I think the original twist spec was 1-9.45 but for all practical purposes there would be no difference on the twist and it wouldn't affect pressure at all. In fact that really light 125gr bullet would fly just fine out of a 14 twist barrel or so.

Howdy !

Thanx for your thoughtful and informative response.

Here’s a pic of my “.358AutoMag “. NE Indiana barrel maker Red Scherer cut the barrel for me in 1977, and it sat 20yr before I decided to have J.D. Jones chamber it for me.
I had SSK Industries do the chambering/threading, because they had a .357AutoMag reamer. I think they changed the pilot bushing on it, for use in a .358” cal barrel.

I formed cases off both 7BR and 6BR brass. I simply expanded neck ID to full .358” calibre, to allow use of .358” cal rifle bullets.

Shown is an example fired case, alongside of a Cutting Edge .358” cal 150gr turned-brass extended range “ Raptor “ bullet.

IMHO - the 150gr wt is superb for accuracy work in .358” cal, and that jives w/ what might be expected when plotting bullet weights as calibers increase. For example:
use of a 65gr benchrest bullet in 6mm calibre, shooting a notional 115gr weight bullet in a .30BR, shooting a 125gr wt bullet in .323” cal ( as you mentioned ), and then the fairly linear increase to shooting a 150gr wt bullet in a .358” cal accuracy rifle.

I went with a 22” barrel finish length, for overall rifle balance and asthetics. J.D. thought
I should have gone shorter, and opined that I might even have lost vel by going w/ a. 22” instead of a .20” finish length. I used WW296.

Interesting!

A thought/comment on your bullets and bore size of your 358 Automag chambered barrel.

The 357mag bore size is .346" x .355" groove size. Is this what your barrel was made to from 1977? Just curious.

The spec. for a 358cal barrel (actually there are two main ones) either a .349" or .350" bore size and a 357" or a .358" groove size.

What diameter are your solid turned bullets? I'm assuming .358"?

Just be careful with bullets vs bore/groove size barrel and watch your pressures. Just making you think to be safe about everything.
