7.82 Warbird

I recently acquired a hunting rifle in 7.82 Warbird. It came with brass and dies, I'm looking for any load info or pet loads with Berger bullets. There is a little info on Lazzeroni's website but not for the bullets I want to use.

Any info or suggestions would be appreciated.

I wanted one several years age but the brass was so high I went with a 300 Ultra Mag. I am still interested in this round also.

I have a 30-416 Rigby AI and used 30-378 Weatherby data, it worked great for me. All three chambers are very similar.

I have a 30-378, I could use some of the loads I have for it.

Anyone have experience with this cartridge?

Here are some Quickload loads for the 230GR Berger Hybrid
It seems I recall that the Lazzeroni rifles had slow twist barrels so it may not stabilize this bullet.
Quickload lists the 7.82 Warbird as having about 10% less case capacity than the 30-378 Wby.
I have had no experience with the Warbird but do have a 30-378 Wby but haven't shot it for years. The performance difference between it and the 300 PRC just doesn't justify to me the extra powder burned.

What Quickload doesn't tell you is the 700-1,000 round life for the barrel.

Lazzeroni claims "excellent velocities with RL25, but accuracy suffered".
Before RL23 & RL26 became available RL22 was their prefered powder.

I realize this is an older post, however I am new to this site. I'm not sure what rifle you have, but mine is a sako trg-s. I have found that the 168 gr vld hunter makes a great load sitting on 94.3 gr of 7828. I realize that to most this seems light and a waste of a warbird. Mine is used for hunting so usable accuracy is the goal. This gave me 5/8 groupings at 100 yards, and the bullets just get better with distance. Seating is a little finicky with them so get very accurate measurements because a slight change in depth will change the zip code on the target.

Makes perfect sense to me. Lazzeroni brass was always the weak link on these and a mild load would save the brass. My friend owned one and told me if Lapua made brass for it i would still be shooting it.

I have been looking for some place on the net that would give ME some load data on the Warbird, but I have I have found very little worth the time. I am not hunter I am long range shooter and have been working with my TRG-S ON and OFF for about 15 years now. I just got back to working with this rifle and found your request for load data.

This what I have so far. My rifle has a Pac-Nor 28" SS, 3 groove, 10 twist #7 medium target, straight taper barrel. I don't know if knowing the barrel data will help but here it is.

It would great if you would share any data you have.

Mine is also a TRGS and it came as a 30-378 WBY. I never bought any Weatherby brass, it went straight to the gunsmith and came home with a Rock Creek barrel chambered in 338 Lapua. I have never regretted that decision. Load data is in abundance and help is plentiful.

I bought a Warbird, dies, virgin and loaded brass this year. When the rig has a McMillan BR stock, McBros action and the heavy tapered barrel looks factory black like the action, I tend to credit their load decision.

They had gone with the coated 168’s and probably got an easy 3,600 fps in a “longer than test” barrel, and great brass life. Lazzaroni also picked this combo for factory ammo, and put out a white sheet on loads. There are heavier, higher BC bullets decades later but this is a cartridge you don’t want to be buying a lot of replacement brass for.

I saved one of my targets showing how well this gun shoots the 220gr SMK.

I wish the brass was worth a shit! Seems like I can only reload it about 3-5 times and then the neck splits, and yes I anneal it every time.

The load data is listed above in this thread.

If I remember correctly there was a shooter in Tucson, saguaro club, who shot a Lazz Patriot very successfully. He knew the maker so might have insight on your purchase if you can find him. Good luck.

I think the Warbird is a more unique, niche cartridge. The .338 LM could conceivably fill most roles of the Warbird or the 30-378 but the speed attainable with those ultra 30’s and light bullets could have some amazing energy transfer results.

For example, put a soup can filled with water on a silver dollar and shoot it with something approaching 4K fps or faster.

Presently the 30’s have the BC advantage at the heavy end of bullets, relative to the 338’s as well.
