7.62x54R Reloading Questions (.303 150Gr / H335)

Hey guys!

As the title states, I'm looking for a decent handload for 7.62X54R to fire out of my Mosin Nagant 91/30. I purchased some PPU 7.62x54R, and plan on using that brass, since it's boxer primed.

Anyways, most of the load data I can find strangely enough, is for .308 sized projectiles. Based on the age of the rifle, and not really wanting to slug it, I decided it would be best to go straight for .303 / 0.312" sized projectiles - and the Hornady 150gr soft points are looking very good on that front, however I can't find any load data for it with the powder I have on-hand and want to use - which is H335. I can find other load data for the 7.62x54R using H335, but again, that's for the .308 150gr sized projectiles.

Has anyone tried this combo and willing to help?

I use H335 for loading 123grain 7.62X39 FMJ bullets in my British Enfield and Mosin Nagant rifles. Works great with those projectiles, particularly in the Enfield.

I pretty much used 30-06 type powders, 4895, 4064, blc2 etc. Your right to use the .311 bullets, most mosins are pretty well worn, I slugged mine for cast bullets and was getting .314-15. .308 copper may be way undersized.

The nominal size for the Moisin is .310, the same as the 7.62x39. ,311/2 bullets generally work fine. I suggest that you look at Varget/W748 and work up speed to see how the rifle handles it.
Military ammo was said to be 150g at around 3000fps and 180g at 2700, but I would not jump in with 30/06 load data.

One of the better bullets you can get for any M-N is the Sierra 174gr / .311 ...Stock # is 2315 . been shooting them for around ten years now , and they work well with any of the 4350 powders . If light bullets are your choice , then look for a powder that will get you around 2,750 - 2,800 fps with a 150 gr bullet . A starting load of 46gr with 335 is the Hodgen recommend , but I've found that powder to have a very narrow window . 4064 , 4895 , VV 140 .

H-335 like other's said, is too fast burning for your application... but you if have no other alternative you can start around 49 gr H-335 and not go over 52 gr... Preferably 51.5 gr should be MAX/near MAX. and Case fill will not be optimal, thus if possible use Magnum primers, but magnum primers won't matter if if's just for plinking.
