7-6.5PRCW reamer release

Alex Wheeler

I have decided to make my reamers public through JGS. They will be named 7-6.5PRCW and 7-6.5PRCW no turn. Dates will show today on them because of the name change. But these are the reamers from 2019 or 2020 or so that I have been using the whole time.

I will ad, dont go applying this lead angle to everything. You will be disappointed.
If you don’t mind sharing. Why do you think it is that this lead angle doesn’t work as well with other caliber/chambering? I know a lot of people have tested it including you I’m sure.

While everyone has been jumping on this lately, its something I have been testing a long time. Tried many angles, diameters, steps, ext. The lead angle has a relationship with the bullet ogive. However theres no formula. I have sent bullets out for ogive measurements and compared that to with angles that have worked good. This angle in another cartridge, with a different bullet took 2 years to figure out it was not working despite very encouraging testing. You would never have see it in score. While its working well with the 180 hyb, this is literally the only reamer I use with this angle. Bottomline is most wont listen anyhow. It will be good for them to do their own testing and find out.

Theres a reason you dont put this stuff out too soon or at all I have a pile of reamers I dont use that were used for testing. I tried this in 308 for FTR in 2018, BR in the Dasher and BRA. Even WSM and ppc. Went steeper too. 3 degree works well with some bullets. I still have all these reamers plus some with the ogive radius ground in them. So you have money invested and time. So you dont just give it away. But if you do you dont want to too soon. Sometimes things look good at first but it takes time to see your have been chasing your tail for a year or two. Enough guys have reverse engineered this one and copied it, it was time to give it away to those who didn't. But by this time its been proven with the 180 hyb. so I know Im not leading anyone down the wrong path.

Yup, reamers are cheap. I have 8 6 BRA reamers myself as just a consumer. Trial and error, and don't jump to a conclusion after the first 300 rounds on the first barrel would be my 2 cents. Never hurts to hash it out with your gunsmith, as they have a much larger collective sample size.....if they're paying attention like Alex anyhow.

If it didn’t show up in score then how did you know there was a problem? What problem was it causing? If this is private then no worries

Its hard to see small things in score. When I first tried this it was in BR. It took time to see the downside with some bullets. I passed that on when I had guys testing it in F Open. I wanted them to shoot groups through the barrels life to see if the issues I saw in BR would come up. You wont see it in a score match. Have to shoot groups and a lot of them.

As I expected I am getting a pile of questions in messages, emails, and texts. When I release a reamer like this, know that I get ZERO. You are buying a reamer from JGS. I do not get a cut of that. They did not buy the print or anything like that either. So please ask the gunsmith doing your work all the questions you have. If that is me, then please ask. But, I simply cant spend that much time with everyone. :)

@Alex Wheeler: Thank you for publishing a better 7-6.5 PRC reamer print. I am looking forward to getting my own to see how that improves performance.

I have some understanding of the time, expense and effort you put into developing the cartridge and realize that we are all now the beneficiaries of your work--thank you! I am not asking you to divulge more than you want, and, as such, if you don't want to answer this next question, I understand.

It sounds like you are saying that the modified throat angle is projectile specific and the changes you made to the 7PRCW are proven to have a positive impact on that cartridge if using the Berger 180 Hybrid. You have cautioned that applying that throat angle to other cartridges may yield disappointing results. With that in mind is that same throat angle what makes a 284 a 284 Wheeler?

Thank you,
Hank

Yes, thats what made the 284 wheeler a wheeler, just this throat. Thats the first 7mm cartridge I used it in. So I just carried it over to the PRC when I designed that case. I have tried the 1 degree lead in the 6mm first in BR. I no longer use it and am back on the 1.5 because of weirdness that I saw. I will revisit it with a different bullet soon. Thats what Im saying, so far the 180 hybrid in 7mm is the only really good fit I have found for it. You have to try different bullets and pay very close attention to how the guns tune acts over time. Just didnt work in the 6mm with the bullets we tried, didnt work in the ppc either. I have a lot of reamers, 308 and 300 wsm with it to not to mention all kinds of throaters with different angles. Who ever came up with the 1.5 degree lead did not do it by accident. It is by far the most versatile angle I have used that works with a lot of bullets and doesnt have weirdness to it.
