7-6.5 PRCW - N160 findings

I haven’t tried N165 and my original post was how N160 showed promise against my current load of N555 in a small sample test @100 yards. I finally got to go test it at 600 yards where I’ll be using it. There is no long range matches within reasonable distance of me.

Once again this was in my rifle so your mileage may vary. 32” Brux, 8.5 twist, Lapua. Brass, sorted-pointed 180 hybrids. My current load of N555 is 55.9 grains and gives me a velocity of around 2890. I tried 2 loads of N160. 55.7 and 56.1. Those were the two that showed the most promise initially. 55.7 shot the best and in just a 10 shot sample of all three loads the N160 @ 55.7 shot 2.3” group. With an average velocity of 2860. The N555 shot a 2.7” group with a velocity of 2892. The ES and SD were basically identical for all intent and purpose. When I get time I’m gonna run a larger test but for my rifle it’s showing promise against N555. I didn’t save the target pictures but I’m gonna shoot a couple of mach strings when I get a chance, but I am going to carry N160 to the next match 10/11 to put it to the test. Anyways I’ll post it when I do it. Blessings to you all.
Dwayne
You really are a pastor:)?

I run the numbers in grt and velocity in n165 for 7prcw looks tragically low. I don’t see how barrel life argument holds its validity if we pack a lot more powder into that case in comparison to n555 and increase pressure as well. We also increase the recoil. In order for this project make any sense it should print much bettee groups. Does it?
Maybe so but in my 7PRCW 59g was pushing a 180 hybrid at over 2900. 32 inch krieger barrel 8 twist and 210m primer. Chronograph used was a Garmin

If you expect GRT (or QuickLOAD) predictions to be just as promised, may I sincerely interest you in buying London Bridge? Short of cash, so very cheap for a quick sale. :)

More seriously, QL and GRT are fine for doing a sort on potentially useful combinations, and beyond that charge vs incremental table printouts to take to the range in testing sessions to compare predicted against actual. The programs' default values are frequently way out, and that, vitally, includes the key Ba values. Viht serially classes its products as 'too slow' compared to some from other manufacturers, and this shows up in the only arena that matters - real performance in the field or on the range as shown by a decent model chronograph. (...... or for those into diving straight to maximum weight charges predicted by the programs without working up, blown primers and similar.) It's not just internal ballistic programs that are affected, but burning-rate charts and lists as well as they're all based on data from individual manufacturers.

I'm sure it does the company's sales no good as high velocity is the number one priority for many handloaders. When bullet companies make decisions on the powders they'll test for their next reloading manual or online update, QuickLOAD is their usual starting point, and until recently N160 in particular came out very badly against competitors in terms of predicted MVs, so this product barely figures in most manuals. QL's compiler changed the default to make it considerably 'quicker' between versions 3.8 and 3.9, but I still reckon it's too 'slow'.
