Anybody have a good educated guess what velocities can be arrived at 22" barrel. What is a good powder for this application?

I used to use 45.0grs. of RL-15 with 150gr SciroccoII's>>>It was going 2800f.p.s. I also had a load with 48.5grs of H4350 with 139Hornady Interlocks>>>it was going, now get this>>3011f.p.s. I had a 26'" Shilen Select Matchgrade barrel.. The Hornady's would kill deer-sized game like lightening.. I never got to place one of those Scirocco's in an animal>>>However, there would have been little doubt of the outcome!

In my old Savage (long ago...) I was able to get 2900 + in its 22" barrel using 4064 and Noz 140 solid base bullets.
My current 700 (24") does not shoot quite so fast ; I got close to 2900 again with 4064 with a little heavier charge.
I had to go to 4350 to get good velocity with 160 partitions.

You might try RL 17 ; I got close to 2800 with 150's real easily and am going to try that powder exclusively when I start shooting the 7-08 again.

I using 49.0 grains of RL17 , with a Berger 140 hunting VLD , CCI200 primer . after adjusting quickload to this rifles water case capacity this load is about 1.0 grain over max . this load could be to hot in another rifle . so start low and work up . Jim

I don't recall what I used -- it was less than max from the Alliant data sheets I have for RL 17 (these show Speer 145 and 160 gr.).
I just shot a few rounds to get an idea of possible velocities and if any pressure signs.
I fully intend to test more with RL 17 based on what I have seen so far using this powder.

I tried H4350 behind 140s in my 24" and found that I was going to compressed loads.

I've tried Varget and gotten great results and velocity. (2900 to 3000) My rifle has a throat cut to allow me to shoot long loaded 162s if I want to so I'm jumping a long way with mag length 140s. I'm not at home to look at my reloading logs so I can't give hard numbers but I think I was running 42gr to 43gr or so of Varget. My rifle hit a node around 2900 with the regular AccubondsI think.

Varget, RE15 and maybe 2000MR should all be very good with the 140s. If I went up to the 150 or the 162s I'd look for something slower but for the 140s I think Varget/RE15 is in the right neighborhood.

Look for a good node, accuracy trumps velocity every time, and in a hunting bullet the game will not be able to tell the difference in 2800 and 2950 unless you miss, then they will take longer to die. If you look at JBM, you won't be able to tell the difference either at reasonable hunting distances (say inside of 400 yards)

my 49.0 grain load ,with low extreme spread ,was plenty accurate for me .

the three dots are from this rifle load . left 48.0 , middle 48.5 , right 49.0 shot from 200 yds .

close up of the 49.0 target . velocity readings 3077 , 3077 , 3080

Mines a 24" built ruger tang safety. I use 140 nosler hunting BT
I tried 3 loads to work on I settled with 42gr varget
