7-08 Stevens 200 Build

I am working on my second Savage /Stevens 200 build-- this one is a 7mm-08 I bought the rifle on sale at BUD's and as soon as I got it home I ordered a Boyds Ross Thumbhole stock--Sharpshooter supply Single shot follower and and SS Tach bolt (Thanks Gilbert) and I also got steel model 10 trigger guard since you can not use the stevens- the smith is in the process of full length beding the action--I tweaked the spring and it helped the trigger a bit (it is still pretty crunchy) I went with leupold Baase and rings-- I have a 3.5-10 X 50 Leupold VX-III that will go on this gun(May send it back to leupold and have a target turret placed on elevation only)--I will stay with the factory tube for now--we will see how it shoots--

Any thoughts on the tatrget turet fir the Leupold-- or and other improvements on this budget build??

This will be my go to deer gun this year--if every thing goes well

Plan to at some point do a barrel swap --to???--Thinking 257 BOB AI

BTW the first build was a 270 Stevens 200 I built for my son--picked it up new for $179 I ordered the Boyds stock and SS Supply follower and triger guard--added a Burris 3-9 BP scope I had setting on the safe.

It shoots .625" groups at 100 (3 shot)- 5 shots move it to 1" or so with the factory tube.

That is why I am giving them a second shot--

I have been a handgun shooter for years but I still love the rifles too.

I would interested to hear from the Gunsmith how much work was required to fit/bed the action in the Boyds. Any material removal ??

Just me but I would stick with the 7mm-08.

He charged me $50 ea. to bed the guns--I thought that was a very good deal---since we added the single shot plug--I fitted a small wood block in each of the mag wells and he beded the actions from the barrel nut to just behind the rear action screw. On my sons it shows a very faint line of beding around the margin of the action. He did remove some material to get the action to fit perfect in the stock

My short action stock was a better fit than the long action on my sons

One more note I did replace the plastic bushing (on the front action screw) in the boyds stock with a aluminum one I fabricated

I also used a steel trigger guard

Why not drill the trigger and install a set screw for sear adjustment. Then at least you will have a pretty fair trigger. Have your smith do it ,that way you wont have to worry if you are not sure about what I am referring to. Basically converting the trigger to a 3 screw from a 2 screw.

Would hapen to have some photos of that conversion--just so I can get a better idea of the upgrade
