6xc with 10 twist

a cant figure out how to post a picture:( i can text a pic

1:10's fine for anything up to maybe 95 grains. You might even find 100's work OK if you're where it's warm & higher than 3,000 feet. Shooting heavier bullets, when you're at a lower altitude and/or it's 60F or below, an 8 twist or faster is going to be more capable.

I shot a bunch of 88's out of 8 tw at 3300+ in 6XC never ever had any poofs 2 different barrels. But that was a few years back maybe they changed the jackets or something.

just had gre-tan rifles build me a slow twist 6xc, sako iii action krieger 26" and wow does it shoot, using 88 bergers with h4350 under 1/4 inch groups couldnt be happier

What brass and primers did you end up with?

You'll like that 10 twist 6xc as a hunting rifle.;)

Greg builds a great rifle, I've never seen a rifle he built that didn't shoot. He's also a great smith and is willing to help with simple problems. I'm sure you'll love that rifle. Enjoy, Rick

Can you explain why you would like the 10 twist as a hunting rifle ?
I have never shot any 88 gr ers so I cant say...but I have shot quite a few 87 gr V max in a 1-8 and they are impressive.
My 6xc's are in 1-8 and 1-7 and I really like them..I traded a rifle for a 240WM(lol...) I like it but the problem I have is trying to find a good bullet for hunting with it is quite a task anything with a good BC or that I know works well does not fare well in a 10 twist..I wish my 240 was a 1-8 I was even considering getting it rebarreled but now that Lapua is making 6.5 creed brass my next barrel will be a 6.5...I settled on a 95 Berger classic hunter in the 240 but hunting weather say 30 deg F or colder 1,000 ft elev. they are marginal stability. but I think the best it can be. close range the 100 gr Nosler partition get's my vote. The 105 class bullet's or 115's are the very best the 6 bore can be as a hunting cartridge and that is from experience with over 7 one shot DRT kills on big game with the 105's very impressive..but the good BC keeps the velocity up and they do buck the wind well even when you have to make a 400 yard shot at 20 deg F in a 10 mph wind with 80% RH cold thick air..hunting weather..the 105 to 115 cant be beat IMO..

For the type of hunting that you do, and the bullets that you like the best the 7 and 8 twists would definitely serve you best.

My hunting is confined to from crows and groundhogs, coyotes and deer. Most of the shots that I get and take are 350 yards and under on varmints and predators, and on deer they are all under 250. And most of the hunters that I know and hunt with that is their MO as well. I find the 70gr NBT and 75gr Vmax more than a match and quite effective on the varmints, and the 85gr Sierra HPBT works wonders on deer. I am most familiar with the mid weight range of bullets from the 6mm family thus that is why they are my favorite for hunting.

Just your way of hunting vs my way of hunting. Nothing wrong with either one. WD

yep I know quite a few guys who use the sierra 85 HPBT in the 243 and 6rem...And I get it they work..i know a guy who has took several BIG Bucks with that combo..Yea most of the deer we shoot are 200 to 600..but we have shot em as close as 40 yards to 950 yards..So when I go I like to have it covered from 40 to 1K...like sitting here yea hoping to see something at 40 yards but at the same time can see 650 yards across to the other hill..shame to see a few deer over there and not be able to shoot them.I am 50 years old and when I was in my 20's we had met up around 10 am on top this hill to talk about driving out some woods and a boy said looking threw his binocular there are some deer over there..and I never forget one guy said I don't know why you boys are looking over there you cant shoot that far.well actually we can it was 750 yards..I smoked one with a .270 win and a 130 NBT..that guy could not believe it..We have much better equipment and rifles now days..but 750 is still a poke on a whitetail..

I have a 10 twist and 8 twist 6xc's. The reason i made a 10 twist was to shoot the 88 bergers and lighter bullets. My 8 twist would blow up the 88 bergers at over 3400 fps. They would actually make the target at 100 yards and disintegrate somewhere between 100 and 200 yards. I have always believed that you should get the slowest twist that will stabilize the bullet you want to shoot. I found you will get more consistent accuracy this way. Also I have gotten more bullet speed with slower twist barrels for the bullet you want to shoot. The 6xc is probably one of the best varmint rounds their is, get a 9 or 10 twist it will out do the 243 and rivals the 6mm remington. I shoot 105's in my 8 twist but for a varmint rifle I love the 10 twist.

What about this cartridge for a long range prairie dog rifle? Recoil with 85 grain bullets? To me this cartridge is a short .243. Am I about correct?

Recoil is noticeably less than the .243 shooting the same bullets.

The chief differences that I notice is nearly the same velocities using less powder. Definitely better barrel life. I find them to be more inherently accurate also. JME. WD
