6XC VS 6mm 22-250

I am interested in knowing what the differences and relative advantages/disadvantages are with the 6XC vs. the 6mm X 22-250? I've read about the brass problems with the 6XC--and plan to start with good 22-250 brass.

What about feeding both and magazines for this rifle? I'm considering the DPMS Panther as a platform for an X the course rifle in either caliber. Both cartridges seem to be very close in size and capacity, but I haven't seen a comparison anywhere.
How would either feed? Barrel life and ballistics should be close, right? What questions should I be asking? Thanks for the help. Tainos.

From what I've read and heard personally, the 6XC feeds better in rapid fire. I went with the 6XC to start with and have never had a problem feeding. I have a friend who was using the 6-250 and he did have some problems and has since gone to 6XC when he replaced the barrel. There is a lot of body taper in the 6-250 case and is reported to cause the problem in some rifles. I just avoided it up front with the 6XC. He used his same 6-250 brass in the new 6XC chamber after running it through the Tubb FL die and has had no problems since.
I can't for the life of me see why anyone would go with a 6-250 for XTC. I suspect it is due to the up front $$$ for the Tubb 6XC Die. That is shorts sighted in my openion. Once you have the die, there is no brass problem and the 6XC is 'Proven' by the best shooters in the country. Why handicap yourself over a FL die? Expect to see the FL die available from all the major players real soon. The Tubb FL 6XC bushing die is a cut above all the dies in my rack with the intergal shoulder in the neck bushing. Perhaps I should suggest that you and others go with the 6-250. Then I get to relax as you shoot the aliby strings in RF. HE He...

Reid, thanks for the info. What gun are you using for the 6xc and what modifications did you need to do with magazines for XTC shooting? What bullet and barrel twist are you using? Do you use the same bullet for all distances?

FWIW: I just ordered the first 6XC, full-length type S bushing die from Redding, paying an extra $50 "engineering set-up fee" for being the first to order one. Subsequent dies should cost $118.50. No need to thank me.;)

I have a T2K. I just bit the bullet so to speak and went that route. I've got 3 6XC barrels for it, all 1 in 8" twist. The original 25" that came with it and a 26" Krieger set back as a spare when the first one dies. I have a 30" Lilja for long range using the 115's. The original 25" has a little over 1600 rounds down it and the throat is out about .030". I use 70 gr Sierra HPBT @ 200 with 35.0 gr Varget in a fire formed Norma 22-250 case. 34.0 gr Var/85 Sie HPBT @ 300 and 39.0 gr IMR 4350 / 107 @ 600. I use 39.5 H4350 / 115 in the 30" for 600-1K. I have a 30" Krieger Med wt 308 Palma barrel for the Palma matches
@ 800-1K. I originally debated about converting my P64 M70 308 XTC into 6XC but I have a bunker full of 30 cal stuff and barrels
so I just left it alone. The P64 has a 30" Krieger light weight
Palma barrel on it and serves as a backup to the Tubb gun for Palma matches. If the gun will shoot and feed 308, there will be no problem with the 6XC. I'm in the process of selling off a couple other XTC/Palma rifles as I migrate exclusively to the T2K. It is a 10 minute job to pop one barrel off and install another on the T2K. That 10 minutes includes the time to use a bubble to check the alignment of the front/rear sights. I'm not surprised that Redding is offering a 6XC Die as they make the Seater for Tubb. Thanks, Rick. It was just a matter of time.
I use a 6BR Redding Comp Neck Bushing die to do up my ammo as I do not FL resize the brass every time. Tubb only offers 2 bushings with his FL die and I like option of a little more control using the 6BR die and an assortment of bushings. I actually use the 'Gauge' bushing to do the FL sizing and then the 6BR to get the neck the way I want them.
Now if Tubb would just offer a bolt and Mags in 223 I could sell my M700 XTC in 223 for the short range 100/200 yd walk and paste matches.
Wish he had made the T2K 40 years ago when I first started shooting XTC. In my book the T2K/6XC is the only way to go as I have used them all.

Rick,
The 6XC resize die from SSS is $129.
When compared to your special order 6XC Redding die you saved,or at least the next order will) $12 over the cost of a hardened tool steel surface ground die with 3 integral neck/shoulder bushings.
You will be receiving a surface hardened, only) die with which the lower portion of the neck never gets resized -,this applies to all Redding bushing dies).
Essentially you bought a Corvette when you just as easily could of had a Ferrari.
If you want a 6XC seating die you will likely be ordering it from SSS so you basically cost yourself another $7 in shipping by getting the seater from a different source. So the difference in savings is now down to about $5.

David,

Thanks for the reply. I didn't do it to save money. I did because it is what my gunsmith recommends. I use his recommended combo,Redding Type S FL die and Wilson Seater) for everything I load and know how to use them to get good results. While I enjoy fiddling with new stuff, I don't have much time for it now that I have kids, so I go with what I know, even if it is a few bucks more.
