6XC vs. 6,5x47 vs. 6,5x55 vs. 308 Win. ....help please !

In terms of the 140 gr low vlds, they are just a smidge heavy for the 6.5 X 47 even if seated very long which then doesn't work for mag feeding in a short action.

For a do all chambering the 6.5 Swede will handle the heavier bullets better. Another thought might be the 6.5 X 57 which has a standard .473 base diameter unlike the Swede. Just neck down 7 X 57 brass or neck up 6mm Rem brass. That will thump out the heavies a little better. Either choice there will not work in a mag fed short action so just get a standard length action.

One thing about the 6 XC and other similar size 6mm cases is the crazy high BC of the new Berger 105 hybrids.

6,5 CM and 260 Remington, although good calibers, are out of the question, as the rifle manufacturer I'm interested in does not offer these two chamberings. ;)

I'd still stick to the 6,5x47L vs. 308 Win. debate.... ;)

I have shot all the cartridges in competition to 1,000 yds. so I have some knowledge of them all. If the conditions are perfect the 6xc is the way to go. That said, (perfect conditions) are rarely on the menu. I am currently shooting a Swede Improved that shoots inside my 6.5x284 but they are single loaded. The 308 is a very versatile round or it wouldn't have remained popular for so long. This leads us down be default to the 6.5x45L. A charge of N-140 or N-150 and a 130 gr. at mag length is all you will ever need to do the tasks you require.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

What about barrel wear ?

I see No One has mentioned that....

If I am not wrong, 308 should be able to average 5000+ easily.....

What about the Lapua ? :)

Expect better then 2500rd with the Lapua. If not more.

The 6XC and Swede will be below 2000

Three times in this thread I have read that 140s seated long won't mag feed. My 142s seated .0015" off are 2.735" overall. The boatail/bearing juntion is above the neck/shoulder line. I could push these out another .1" and still mag feed, but the bearing surface would be so short I think the bullet might drop out. If it wasn't for the A.I.s whorishly large firing pin hole I bet I'd see 2850 with H4350 and a 142/140 and 2950 with a 130.

What magazines are you guys using that this is a problem? My 308win is loaded to 2.830" and I have no issues loading from the mag with a fatter bullet.

Alright, I've done some measuring. I see what the guy shooting 140 BH are talking about . I have both 140s and 142s loaded .0015" off and the Berger OAL is 2.800". The 142 is 2.735". I haven't measured bearing surface on either but the SMKS surface is visibly longer. So, it looks like if you set the freebore up to allow about .05" bearing surface it may be too long with the Hybrids but the 142s will be close to dropping out before it gets close.

Question is, what would min purchase be for bearing surface to allow mag feeding without knocking he bullet off axis?

I have a 6.5x47, 28 inch BRUX barrel on a Savage action> I would agree with previous statements on the 6.5 but would also suggest that you consider going up to a 28 inch barrel with a taper that would allow you to set back and re-chamber one time. For twist, 1:8. iA 1:8 twist barely will handle the lighter bullets fairly well but the slower twist barrels usually don't like the 140s.

6.5x47 with a 130 JLK (G1 BC over .6) @ 2900+ FPS VS anything you can do with the .308... This isn't a two horse race.

6.5x47 Lapua with an 8.0-twist barrel and 140 hybrids gets my vote. Good barrel life, superb brass that will last forever, excellent 1K performance in the wind. Everything the 6XC can do, the 6.5x47 can do better. It will have much less recoil than the 308WIN

And the 6.5 bullets buck wind better or as well as most 30's without belting the shooter around. I read an article in a shooting magazine a while back which stated the 260 Rem may eventually replace the 308 Win. in the Tactical Rifle discipline because of its better ballistic qualities. But I'm still going to keep my 308 as I kept my 222 Rem when the 223 came out.
