6XC + Varget

I had good results with 107 MK at around 35.2 to 35.5 grains varget 20 thou in the lands speed was 2950 to 2975 hope this helps

Like Cat it works fine for me but only with 105/107 class in my rifles. For 105-115 H4350 is tough to beat but with the 115 DTAC RL 17 is my powder of choice. I'm a tac shooter not BR.

Has anybody had success with varget in the 6xc?

Trevor I tried it early on & the batch I had at that time must have been on the slow side, I couldn't get enough in the cases to get anywhere near what H4350 was giving me with the 107SMK. Since then I've tried several other popular propellants, my current favorite is IMR's 8208XBR with the 105 Berger VLD or Hybrid when I can find any. Works great out to 1,000 yards.

Hey fellas I'm a relatively knew 6xc shooter. I'm currently using 39.5gr H4350 and I'm not getting the accuracy I was hoping for with the 105 hybrid. I tested quite a few charges and settled on 39.5. It seems to shoot about 1/2 minute but that's about all I van squeeze out of it.Where might I start at with varget and 8208xbr and do you think it would make any difference accuracy wise?

For reference the rifle is a tuned 700 with a Bartlein 28 incher. 1/7.8. Pointed 105 hybrids. Norma cases and CCI Br2 primers.
Thanks in advance.
Ryan

what exactly are you looking to get out of it?? and how many rounds are you putting into that group?

Well I was hoping for better than 1/2 but it is a tactical rifle so perhaps that's all she can do? When I shoot groups its usually 10 rds but sometimes 5 rd groups when testing various things.

I suggest a bullet and or powder change. I have two XC's one with a Bartlein the other Krieger neither do their best with the 105 Hybrid. Varget wasn't the answer in either never tried 8208. So back to H4350, RL17 and DTAC'S for me.

+1 on Mark S' post. I also have 2 6xc's. In my experience with them Varget is (generally speaking) too fast of a burn rate for your barrel and twist rate combination. You may have to try several different bullets, seating depths, primers, and neck tension combinations with that 39.5gr 4350 load before you are able to wring it down to a consistent .25 group rifle. Also, keep in mind that the shooter can often times make a .25 or more difference.

Also, carefully check the crown for any slight burrs etc. It don't take much of a blemish on the crown to cost ya a quarter of an inch. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. :) WD

Well let's see. I've tried Berger 105 hybrids, 108bts, and 115vlds. Also 115 Dtacs. All BN coated. All shot pretty much the same.Wondering if I should try some naked? I've also got a lb of 8208 I'm going to give a shot. Should be interesting.

Normally the range wants its shooters fully clothed and with shooting glasses and ear protection. ;)

Seriously.... I assumed that you were shooting uncoated bullets in the first place, thus the responses we (I) gave. Personally I'm not a fan of coated bullets at all. So my advice would be for you to completely, properly, and thoroughly clean the bore and try some uncoated bullets. WD

The problem is definitely the coating. BN (Boron Nitrate) is an abrasive - you should have used hBN, which is hexagonal boron nitrate and a lubricant. ;)

Allow me to correct a small error: Boron Nitride (in the hexagonal crystal state, usually used as an industrial, high temperature dry lubricant sometimes referred to as 'white graphite') is what's needed - hBN.

Boron Nitrate (B(NO3)3) is a different compound entirely, an oxidizer and maybe (or not) an abrasive as suggested.

Haha yeah I should have put hbn. I figured most would know what I meant. Was out shooting the other day and again no problems shooting 1 inch groups at 200m and 1.5 at 300m with both the 108bt and the 105 hybrid but nothing smaller. Perhaps I should scrub out the barrel and shoot naked(bullets that is). I guess a wire brush is the way to go to take it all out eh? I'll be using wipeout most likely.

Or you could try getting the bore squeaky clean then coating the bore with hBN. http://theswissriflesdotcommessageboard.yuku.com/topic/9031/hBN-again-and-this-time-I-ll-leave-it#.UCm9kKDrl-x
I'm shooting .25 MOA at 500 yards with hBN coated bore and hBN coated 105 AMax bullets pushed with RL-17 and lit with 215Ms.

I actually tried coating the bore as above however it made a mess and it didn't make anything shoot any better.

I don't understand how it made a mess. Did you coat with hBN powder suspended in 90% alcohol using a bore mop? And did you shoot a hBN coated bullet within 30 minutes?
