6XC Tubb Ammo brass OD?

I just got a new Short Action Custom Gun in for 6XC spec’d to Tubb’s reccomendations. To start a baseline before loading I bought 50 of Tubb’s loaded 115 DTacs. Although I bought his die set with the included shoulder bushings, I also bought a Redding S Bushing Die for comparison. Tonight when measuring the OD of a Tubb loaded round I came up with an OD of .273-.274 which if wanting .002 neck tension would call for anredding bushing of .271 -.272”. The bushing included with the Tubb dies are at least .005” tighter then typical Redding. I assume it has something to do with his should/neck bushings bu,t something does not add up. I generally just size with a full length bushing die and the run the case through an expander die on the next station....

Anyone been through this or know what I am missing? If you shoot 115 DTACs w/NORMA brass, id be interested in what kind of OD you are getting on your loaded ammo, etc. This is a new caliber for me and I want to at least start of with Tubb’s dies as he does have some credibility when it comes to loading and shooting accurate rounds:)

Thanks!

Use the .268 bushing for a no neck turn Norma case which should put you in the neighborhood of a .002 neck tension. Works great. Use the .266 bushing if you are going to turn the necks down a few thousandths.

Thanks! His Bushings arendifferent and confused me. Do you Find his die “small basing” to Be an issue as Some report? I’m shooting out of a bolt Action....

I'm a little surprised your loaded ammo came .274 and .273. I checked several of my 115 DTAC loads with Norma and Tubb brass and they all are ..26985 -.27015 I have four 6 XC's built with .274 reamers and 2 6XC ll .276. When I load most of my Norma brass I use .268 or .269 bushings made for Redding dies.

That is interesting. The loaded 115 DTACs from Tubb were different from the box of Dtacs bullets I ordered. Slightly below the tip of the bullets tip, there was a distinctive ring circle cut into the face of the copper shell. Thinking they were labeled wrong on the box I called Tubb and was told this is his latest “improved”
115 DTAC. That is why my reading must differ from yours and not matching up with the Tubb bushings vs using Redding where I could order any bushing size I want. In other words, his new bullets profile is different then the one sold for years. So much for ordering his loaded Ammo to use as a “baseline” for setting up my new Caliber dies. I will call them Monday....

The ring aids in transsonic transition and improves overall BC variances. David Tubb explains it in this interveiw with Frank Galil On his podcast.

Pretty cool stuff, he explain why the plastic tips help due to the plastic and bullet junction.

I remember that video in my foggy brain. I don’t see a plastic tip but they may have matched the color just right. I’ll try to post a picture later on. THE problem though is if the BULLET profile is different, then anyone who bought his dies over the last 15 years are out of luck because the included bushings are now sized wrong and are not interchangeable with other brands...I would think anyhow..love to be wrong..

No he doesnt incorporate a plastic tip, he merely states that that transition from plastic ro bullet is what helps. Hence the ring on the bullet.

Find the podcast on the snipershide its pretty good interview

Does anyone use a mandrel as a second step with bushing dies? If so, what size are you using and for what final neck tension? Also, the Tubb die “grabs” so much sizing the base small; I’m tempted to just use a Redding type s bushing die...anyone used the Tubb die? I could see using it for an AR but in a bolt gun?

Is there a way to find this pod cast? Thank you very much.

As long as you are not shooting rapid fire as in XTC matches you should be fine with standard dies. You do not want sticky bolts during rapid fire.

Thanks, that is helpful. It seems not all manufacturers are on same page with dimensions to include brass. 6XC vs 6XC II vs 6x, etc.

I have used David's dies since I bought my T2K in 2004. I always use 22-250 brass. Lots cheaper and no big deal. Just formed 1000 Sig cases and have .265 necks sized and .268 necks loaded. Largest neck I could find was 0.270 in some loaded Win cases. Load 38.0 H4350 and go shoot. If it doesn't shoot your gun is broke.

What BULLET are you putting over the 4350?

105, 107, 108, 115 Berger's and Sierra's, some DTAC's. 38.0 is not a super hot load. Warm maybe. My reamer is a Hendrikson with the original throat. Krieger, Bartlein, and Lilja barrels. I seat long and let the lands put them where it wants them. Barrels wear too fast to try and maintain a specific jump. I relegate a barrel to practice status at 1500 rounds.

I think it was Tubb’s article that listed the spread for H4350 at 38 to 42 gr...could be wrong but that would mean 38 gr is low end..I hate not being able to find data in a book....there are so many variations of 6XC that members loads are all over the place...I’ll call SAC who built the gun..
