6xc rifle build for berger 115gr VLD or DTAC 115gr

I am building a 6XC and would like to shoot either Berger 115gr VLD or DTAC 115gr bullets. I plan to use a heavy varmint Brux 1:7 twist barrel. Does anyone have any experience with this combo? I would like to get velocity around 3000fps or better but not sure how long the barrel needs to be.
I would also be interested in hearing about successful loads for either of these bullets.
Thanks,
Fieldstone

Good choice! I really like the 6XC. I have owned two. One was a bench rifle using a Bat action and a 28" Krieger 1:7.5 barrel.
Using H4350 I was around 2950 fps. I do not recall the powder charge, bu I want to say around 39.5 grains.
I used 115 DTAC'S (bare) exclusively with this rifle. Shot the smallest group to date I have ever shot at 1000 yards in a sanctioned match with it.

The next rifle was a "tactical" type rifle, based on a Surgeon action and a 27 1/2" Bartlien 1:8 twist barrel.
I used 107 SMK's with it and again H4350. I was right around 2975 fps.

I have tried R-17, and got more speed, but the H4350 was just so darn consistent that it was "the powder" for my two rifles.

I think you will really enjoy the 6XC. If you do not try and run really hard, brass life is good and it is very easy to find a very accurate load.

Take care, Stan

The 6xc is a great case for the 105-107 gr bullets. Can't beat it.

There is just not enough case capacity for the 115 gr bullets to run 3000fps without high pressures that shorten brass life.

Use a larger case like the 243 SLR and those velocities are achieved at considerably lower pressures and better brass life.

I've had both and run the 115s with the SLR.

7.5 will do just fine with DTACs , I run a 7.7 bartien , 30 " with uncoated DTACs , 39 grns H4350 . Chronoed at 3050 . This is a hotish load . I am hard on my brass . I anneal every 3 firings . I have 20 firings per stick , I am not sure I will make it to 30 .........

Good luck with that xc build got one going myself ,I'm excited also. Sorry my action didn't fit your needs .Had to have the stock for a sling gun.

6xc on a barnard action, 30 inch bartlein 5r 8 twist. I think I'll try the berger 105 hybrids first but we have a lot of good bullets to play with. h 4350 seems to be a popular powder for that rig. I used to shoot a 6.5 284 for mid range it shot well but I'd like a little better barrel life . And I hope what the xc gives up in ballistics it can make up in accuracy.

I've been reading a lot recently on the 6xc, one of the recurring themes is folk shoot the 107 SMKs. I'm getting my 6xc chambered for 105 A-Max, but also plan to shoot the 107 SMKs. When folk like David Tubb are shooting 107 SMKs, I can't find a good reason to do anything different. His loads are listed on the final page of the following url.

My 6xc with a 30inch Broughton barrel,7.3 twist shoots the 115 dtac at 3100 fps with no pressure signs. I have moved to the 105 hybrid at 3200 fps with more consistent results.

I sent a buddy of mine 100 of them, he said he wanted to try them. I did not know at the time he was going to shoot a Deer with them. He trimmed the meplat, worked up a good load in a .243. He sent me a picture of a nice Tn. Deer he shot, that trimmed bullet tore that Deer up.

There is a fella out of Gillette Wy. that shoots speedgoats with them out of a .243AI. He has alot of video's on YouTube. I used to talk to him on another site. Every year him and his son shoot and kill them at mid-range. I've only seen 1 that did not fall where it stopped the bullet.

I'm thinking of taking my 6MM Competition Match to S.C. this year and using the DTAC, thinking, not sure yet.

Fieldstone, The brux is a good choice, but ask for the 7.83 to 1 twist i use it with the 115 DTAC and the 105's ........ jim

If you aim for the neck on a deer, it will either be a clean miss or he is right there with any bullet .

No, I don't think so. A long time ago I shot a large red stag and didn't hit any bone. He walked off and when he stood I shot him in the chest. It wasn't the stag attached, but a similar one. As you can see, there's a lot of neck there and it's easy not to hit the spine.

I went through all of this a few months ago for a 6XC build. I ended up with a Bartlein 1:7.5 barrel that I had finished out at 29". With H-4350 and the HBN DTAC's I'm able to get right at 3000 fps. I could probably push it a little faster but accuracy falls off. I had PTG make the reamer with .148 FB specifically for the DTAC's so when I picked up some Berger 105 Hybrid's at Cabela's on a whim, I didn't expect much. To my delight the 105's shoot even better than the DTAC's and the speed is a little better as well. I have only tried H-4350 and RL-17 (with any bullet) so far. RL17 in the limited testing I've done, didn't do that well. H-4350 shoots everything well.

It's funny that the question about using them on deer sized game should come up too as I was just looking up info on that myself this afternoon. From what I've been able to find, folks seem pretty positive about the DTAC's on small stuff like whitetail.
