6XC Reamer Question

Little confused here after reading the thread on the 6XC reamers.

I'm in the process of having a 6XC built and bought the reamer from Bullets.com along with a Bartlein 5C 1in8 twist 28" barrel thinking that I could use the Norma 6XC brass with Redding dies and be set to go . My plan is to shoot 105-107's for a short range F-Class gun and local club benchrest. Will the Norma brass work with this reamer? Or do I need to get a different reamer? (The barrel has not been chambered yet).

Second question is would it be best to use a SA or LA Remington style receiver? I can go either way, but feel that the LA is more versatile if I wanted to change calibers some day.

New to the site and LR shooting - thanks for your help. I have really learned a lot reading the posts on here.

It is the PTG reamer - just to clarify. Here is the reamer: http://cdn0.grizzly.com/specsheets/t10179_rp.pdf
I do not have the brass yet so I can measure it.

Craig, I talked with PTG about the optimal reamer to use with Norma brass and the 105 Berger Hybrid a few months ago when I was ordering a barrel from Shilen. They had a 6XC reamer, but I wanted to make sure that everything was perfect. Mr Kipp from PTG recommends reamer print 21183 for that combination, so I ordered one. It took 11 weeks for them to make it, but it's now on the way to Shilen so that they can do the chambering and finalize my barrel order.

PM me if you need additional information/details. I have the reamer print that I can share with you.

Wrong reamer for the Norma 6XC brass. The base @.200" needs to be .4714" on the reamer print for the Norma stuff. Trust me, get on the phone Monday!

Thanks for all the info! It is going to save me a lot of grief. Looks like I have the wrong reamer - so will call PTG and JGS to see if there is one in stock/ lead-times. I'm not excited about waiting for 11 weeks to get this project going forward.

Since I've not chambered the barrel yet, is there any advantage to swapping it out for a 7.5 twist instead of the 8 twist? I got a little nervous over not getting the faster twist to shoot the heavier bullets....115g are hard to come by lately, so I figured it was easier to shoot 108's and it should be reasonably competitive out to 600. Will the 8 stabilize the 115g? According to Berger it is marginal - but real life experience is always better. If I shoot to 1000, I'd be inclined to have a straight 284 because of how windy it is here.

Thanks again!
Craig

I have seen first hand a member here had the best shooting Dasher with 115 Bergers and used the Berger recommended 7 twist. Brux 7 twist.

That being said I stay away from any 115, and opt for Berger VLD`s and or their fine shooting 108. An 8 or 8.5 twist Krieger .236" bore gets my vote every time.

I built my 6XC on a Sako A7 short action that was originally a 308 Win. It has plenty of room in the magazine to seat 105gr Berger VLDs and Hybrids. Im sure a long action would work, but the high BC 6mm bullets arent excessively long like they are for other bore sizes, so a long action may be too long and create feeding issues.

No intent to hijack the thread, but how does a long action create feeding issues over a short action? Thanks

Not saying the 6XC wont feed from a long action because i havent tried it. The issue of concern would be that if the magazine lips are designed to feed say a 30-06 case, the rim of the 6XC case may pop up out of the magazine before the tip of the bullet is properly guided to the chamber. At that point the bullet may jam into the face of the barrel shank instead of going into the chamber.

I had the same issue trying to get a 20VT to feed from a 223 size short action. The round would pop up out of the mag and jam between the barrel face and bolt face. Ended up just putting a single shot follower in.

Thanks.
So it's not action length but a magazine issue.
With my 6XC I used SR-25 mags in a Tubb2000. These are plenty big, but I don't know if that action was considered long or short.. Long enough for a .308 length apparently.
And my 6.5wssm feeds fine in a BAT magnum action(long action). But it is true single shot.

I Agree with rcw3 and tclaunch +1

After shooting Norma Brass in a .470 at the .200 mark for a year with out a lot of trouble, some sticky case's going in and coming out.. It needs to be .4714 at the .200 mark. I'm going with rcw3 6XC -2- reamer in my new barrel and if it works as well as it should I may Rechamber the one i'm shooting now..The print even says Basic case is 22-250 Hun..my conclusion is listen to what rcw3 and other's are saying. Yes this is the chamber PTG recommended to me for the New Norma Brass and they are wrong.

Thanks for your help on the reamer. I called PTG and had a less than stellar experience trying to get some help - you'd think that they would put someone on the phone that was trained. I'll be calling JGS to order the correct reamer and get the barrel mounted on a short action.

Gotta ask for Dave Kiff at PT&G. He's the only one I like to talk to when designing a reamer.

Fjim , what are you considering new Norma brass ? I have 500 that I bought several years ago and I am about the have a barrel reamed with the one recommended to me by kiff a few years back as well . Are the newer lots of brass different ?
Thanks ,Chip

don't know..I think all Norma Brass is the same. I just call it new Brass as New to me or new unfired or not a formed 22-250 case.
All I can say is make sure the reamer is .4714 at the .200 mark base.. Check your new cases and they should Mic .2685 at the base. If you chamber it with a reamer that is .470 as mine is you will run into sticky case's. if it's .4695 it's probably worse. Read rcw3 post Reply #2 and go to his website and read about it. I went with what Dave Kiff at PTG recommend to me. It's too tight at the .200 mark. You can see my print in the link posted.

Ordered a JGS reamer that will be here if a while. Folks there understood the issue, got right back to me and sent me an order confirmation before the end of the day. Very nice to work with - can't say I've had the same experience with PTG. Is there another company that makes Remington bolt replacement out there?

Good. craigd my JGS 6xc 2 reamer shipped Friday. my stock shipped today. I have the barrel.scope.action. so it will be off the the smith by the end of next week. then it's just a waiting game till the smith'en is done. I really hope by the first of November .
