6xc pressure signs with 33gr VV N150 and 107gr Sierra

Dear all,

Have a Tubb 2000 in 6xc. Love the rifle; love the caliber. Question: tried a load of 33 gr VV N150 behind a Sierra hpbt 107gr bullet. In my rifle, this produces very shiny extractor marks on the case head. no separation, no sticky extractions...but a concern. Checked the VV relaoding manual: nothing for 6xc of course but roughly comparable 6mm rounds showed a max of considerably less than 33gr of N150.
Is 33gr too much? Or am I worrying too much about shiny extractor marks?

Thanks!

N150 is a bit fast for a big case as 6XC, in ratio with the 6 Norma )
N160 will be better balanced as powder burning rate and better loading density too

good shooting

You having purchase a T2000....my question is why didn't you start with the loads and loading listed for the cartridge by David Tubb?

I have shot the cartridge for 2 years and have had to very from the listed loads very little. You should go back and start with the H4350 loads listed. They work and work perfectly. Do not reinvent the wheel when you have one in your hands.

Billy,

The issue is probably powder, but having never farted around with N150, I cant say for sure. I have, however, used about every other suitable powder, or at least tried them, at some time with the 6XC. Like Joe said, stick to the usual suspects and you will have better results. H4350 is probably the best powder out there for the 6XC. Others will work, but H4350 simply works well, all the time.

Yes, Tubb is using moly, or was, and you usually knock the charges back about 1 gr to even out for a nekkid bullet. If you want data using H4350, Varget, Ramshot Hunter,if you want to use ball powder, look no further), etc, let me know and I will give you all the data you need. I love VV powders, but considering the cost and the fact that other than N560,which will sling the big bullets with fierce velocities), there is no reason to burn up $25+ per pound powder.

Nor is there a reason to use Schnieder bbls, or any other big $$ bbl when a nice, $235 Wilson will out shoot you, and they last just as long and are easier on the budget!....ie, more bullets to shoot! I mention this as one of my T2k's had a bad bbl from the factory and, had I shot my usual loads in it, would have likely had me scratching my head wondering why I had pressure spikes.

Oh, and brass, if you are using Tubb brass, that may also be your issue.

Good loads, good accuracy and good scores are only a step away!

I used to shoot the 240NMC which has just a hair more powder capacity than the 6XC and I was using a SIE 107 Moly'd with 36.5 grs of N-150. Speed.. 3050.. groups were .45 range at 200.. never had a problem with it.. shot some great scores with with high X count, my mental aspect would just never let me clean, but I have shot quite a few 199 with plus 10 X count.

I have used 32-33 grains of Varget in the XC with 107's,uncoated) with zero pressure indicators. VN150 is measurably slower than Varget,... consistently so. I haven't used it, but chemically speaking, it is a well suited burn rate for less than balls to wall loading in this cartridge. I can't offer you a solution to your problem, but I will say you might want to look a bit deeper into this than "burn rate issues".
