6XC + H4831SSC + 115DTac's

Has anyone tried H4831SSC and 115gr bullets in a 6XC? I'm playing with it in a 240NMC which is quite similar to a 6XC. I'm getting velocities in the 3050fps range with low ES. So far groups are averaging under 0.3MOA. Primers do not show pressure signs.

What is your barrel length? type?, are you shooting coated bullets or no?

I didnt reallylike my results I got with H4831SC and my 115 DTACs...always going back to H4350.

Barrel length 30" 7.5 twist. I will be trying HBn coated bullets next. I also plan to try RL-17.
H4350 worked pretty good but I kept getting unexplained fliers. So far, H4831SSC has kept the groups nice and tight.

With that length barrel & twist I'm only mildy surprised that it works so well. Good deal for you.

When you move to the coated bullets, that may well change your powder/charge in what gives best results.

On the R-17, my experience has been that while it will group well, you may have to experiment with an array of primers (including magnum primers) and some different charges with each of the primers to find your sweet spot with it. Lastly with the R-17 you might want to monitor your barrel temperature closely if you intend to shoot more than 5-10 shots within 10 minutes. JMHO.

Let us know how it works out. ;) WD

I plan on using the rifle in F Class. The ballistics of this bullet @ 3050fps is better than my 6.5-284!
Is there a heat problem with RL-17, WD?

I can't say there is an inherent problem..... just that my barrel and another rifle set up very similar to mine showed the same tendency....... began to stray shots after about 8-12 shots in 15 minutes and hotter to the touch than expected.

Just wanting you to see if that happens to yours as well. WD

WD..Can you give me a start load for RL-17 and 115 DTac's. Haven't been able to find much info using RL-17.

In my Tubb 6XC with Norma brass, wolf primers and 115 DTAC HBN, and Schneider barrel, I started with 38 grains and went up from there.

Well...I shot some HBn coated 115's today. Lost about 50fps compared to uncoated. Groups opened up a tad and ES went up some. Also encountered a hard seating problem when seating the bullets (see discussion in the general reloading thread). Think I'll go with non-coated bullets with this one. Will try RL-17 next.

The hard seating thing has me puzzeled. Ive never encountered that with the DTACs and the SS cleaned Norma brass. I anneal after every shot then SS clean , resize custom neck forster FL die @.267 no button, quick inside chamfer touch up (from the SS media slightly rolling the edge )and I get very consistant resize operations . I am .003 on neck tension and they all seat very nice very consistant. over 1500 HBN DTACS this way all season.

I take the DTACs right out of the bag with the extra Hbn all over them and seat . I dont wipe the excess off.

makes me wonder whats going on

This was my first time, too. I've shot hundreds of 6mm VLD's and SMK's that were HBn coated without this problem occurring . I hope someone can shed some light on this!

I found out what was causing the hard seating problem with HBn coated bullets. See "Hbn causing increased neck tension" thread in The Reloading section.
