6XC excessive neck clearance question

Hi All.
I am having a Brux 6mm barrel chambered in 6XC soon and will be using Peterson brass.
I have a choice of 2 reamers. One being David Tubbs he sells in his website which has a neck diameter of 0.278 and he says his neck clearance is 0.004".
As a benchrest shooter that seems excessive but does anyone have a 4 thou clearance and does it perform without problems?
The other reamer is a 0.270 neck and I will have a tight neck of 0.0015/0.002 which my 6BRA has without issue.
Thanks

I’d much rather have .004 than .001/2
I absolutely won’t shoot with less than .003.
Hi Clancy. Thanks. I presume that there's no problem with the longevity of your brass necks? Plus I guess if it's good enough for David Tubbs then it's ok for us mere mortals! But I just wanted to find out any pitfalls in using his .278 neck reamer.

I built a couple 6XC rifles when they were all the rage. I went with a no-turn chamber. I don't remember the specs but both rifles shoot lights out to this day. They have transitioned from OTC rifles to prairie dog rifles and I am still happy with them

I personally hate turning necks, so if i can order an off the shelf reamer that has a bit much but not extreme neck tollerance im going to use it.

I have 2 6XC rifles and purchased DT's 0.160" Manson reamer. I have no issue with his clearances.

BTW, its the best all around 6mm ive shot and Norma is supposed to start producing factory 6XC ammo for distribution in the next year.

I don't shoot bench rest but I have a bench rest rifle with a chamber that needs to have the necks turned. It is more accurate than a no turn neck. So how much accuracy do you need? And is it worth the effort?

A Peterson case neck thickness .0155. with bullet seated it's .274 Mr. Tubb uses a .278 chamber neck and it's worked beautifully for him with unturned brass. I'd never second guess him, he certainly has the credentials and knows what works.

I'm having one built right now. A friend is doing it and his reamer has a .273 neck.....so the chamber will have a .273 neck. Just means neckturning the brass, not a big deal. And with short freebore, this thing should be nasty on varmints. BTW - Being strictly a varmint shooter, everything I have, and my rifles using some form of 6BR case have slower twist and chambers with 0 or very short freebore and shoot lighter bullets very accurately.

With neckturning, you make neck thickness uniform, size them with exactly whatever clearance you want. I'd just as soon use unturned brass which works just fine, but occasionally it needs to be done.

I just got 100 Peterson brass from Mr Tubb, my loaded necks average .2695”
That’s factory brass not neck turned. Made me happy because my reamer has .275 neck.
Same here. My brass came today, a loaded round - 75Vmax - is exactly .270. Strange, because his website lists Peterson brass as having .0155 neck thickness. The stuff I got is .0135. Nice surprise, means I won't need to turn necks.

*****My guess is that what's written in the Tubb site was done years back when things were beginning for the cartridge, And since then Peterson has refined the specs on its brass.

Being a glutton for punishment, I have been forming brass from Lapua Palma brass, PMC once-fired brass, New Lake City 19 brass, and once-fired Winchester 308 brass. Accuracy of NON palma brass was in the low 2s, even brass formed from once-fired Chinese Machine gun brass (primer pockets lasted one firing (107s) at 3150).

I neck turn at 30 cal, neck down, final clean up neck turn after trimming to length.

Shooting the 105-108s, I throat to where the bullet shank/boat tail is .030 above the shoulder/neck junction of the case.

Accuracy with a Tuner is on par with the very best of the dozen or so 6 PPCs I have had over the years, with H4350 and R#17, Rem 7 1/2.

Nodes were at 3050,3150, and with R#17, 3250, with palma brass lasting around 7 firings. At 3150, Palma brass life is just about indefinite, where I put 900 rounds on 30 pieces.

Time to order some Peterson brass and give them a run for their money.

I love the long neck on the 6 XC!
