6XC Bullet Selection for Varmit round -

I have a new custom gun coming that is chambered to shoot the 115 DTAC for target shooting. Does anyone have suggestions for a good groundhog BULLET? I like the explosive types like varmit grenade, blitz king, non richoting. Any suggestions ppreciated...

My 10tw 6xc likes 75gr Vmax. They are quite explosive out of the xc for chucks and coyotes. I've heard the 87's are too. Those would be a good consideration IME. WD

Edit: This is a sporter weight barrel on a Rem 700 action. Also, the 85gr Sierra HPBT bullets are exceptionally accurate out of this hunting set up. WD

80/88 Berger flat base, and I’ll pretty much guarantee you the groups will be better than your DTACS at close ranges. I’ve shot them jumped and jammed, good luck.

I'm waiting for my Peterson SRP Gen 1 brass to arrive, to complete my caliber change to 6XC on a Rem 700 VLS. I too will be starting off working up varmint loads, so I'm watching this thread as well. Once I get it to the range, I'll put up range reports. Problem is, I'm losing valuable comfortable (not cold hands) shooting weather with every passing week. Its still hotter than I like but cool temps come early up here and being a working stiff with chores on the weekend, doesn't afford me a lot of shooting time, not to mention other calibers I'm sharing the too few hours with. Load development is my primary source of impetus for shooting. Living 8 minutes from a good range makes it a lot easier. Ah, to be retired....

I would suggest that you buy a used benchrest max heavy varmint barrel that would be 24" long and have it chambered for your 6 XC. The 70g Sierra blitz kings at 3700 will be quite impressive. You will need a MUCH shorter freebore. In your current rifle with the long freebore for the 115's, an 87g V max may work and the 105g A max which are explosive but are getting hard to find.

I have NOT had consistent luck with the 75g V max. I think that it would be a Hail Mary to try and get a 70g Sierra blitz king or a 70g nosler varm to be accurate in a 7.5 twist and long freebore as both like to be seated touching the lands in my slow twist 6 BR's, Dasher, and BRX.

Howdy !

I have used Sierra 95Mk in my 29" 1-8 SS Broughton w/ 5-"C" rifling.
My rifle is chambered for my " DEEP 6 " widcat, which has case capacity of 51.2gr H2O.

While not highly " explosive " in terminal performance in the classic sense, I could press shots out to 1,000yd on
" Soybeanus Digestus ".... if need be. I myself wouldn't try to press lighter 6mm's 70s out that far.
95s give great flexibility in your range coverage.

I never felt the need to go to heavier 105+ gr 6mm bullerts ( for NE Indiana shooting ).

Haven't gotten to try the newer "tipped" 95Mk, but suspect they'd do well.

Your rifles twist rate is faster, but I'd like to think the 95s could be made to shoot well in your application.

As a relative newbie to the 6XC and I mean I put the barrel on my 700 this past Thursday and broke it in Saturday morning, I don't have a lot of experience. I did however take it on its maiden voyage using 87gr Vmax. This 5-shot group at 100 yds really surprised me, given I had next to no guidance on a recipe. My 26" Remage barrel loved them .030 off the lands.

I'm sure that once I get to actually working up loads for performance, as opposed to throwing something together for barrel breakin, it will shoot these, my 75 Vmax and 70 Blitzking's just as well. Now I need to work on my skills on the bench as I can't blame the rifle.
