6XC and VV powders

I've been getting some rumblings that some folks are getting good results from a couple of VV powders using 105/115 bullets. Anyone out there have any actual data that they would care to share? I'm looking to keep the velocities comparable to H-4350, but keep the temps. down and prolong the bbl. while maintaining the accuracy. Any tips from anyone?

I would think that N-150 would work well with the 107s. N-160 should be just the ticket with the 115s.

I just got some info that N550 was working out real well in the longer bbl. guns also. Hmmm, time to get out the chronograph.

My experience with Vin powders is that they are great powders lot to lot. No they are not temperature sensative like Hogden, but their consistancy lot to lot is by far the best I have tried. Reloader 22 lot to lot was like .4 -.5 grains. Vin was right on the money in 3 lots I have used.

I use VIN N560 for my Swede and nothing comes close, except Norma MRP which is impossible to get. H4831 didn't get my the velocity I wanted without undue pressure.

My advice would be to shoot loads over a chrono as close to the match conditions as possible and keep good data. So you back off .3 grains or something on a hot day..or keep them in a cooler. I realize for tactical shooting its impossible to use a cooler, but hell for what I was doing, F-class its easy and my gun grouped fantastic with it.

I've switched from H4350 to VV N165 in my 30"
Lilja barrel with the 115's. 43.5 gr in Tubb
2 G brass and a Russian primer. Running right
@ 3000 f/s and holds water line elev @ 1K.
In my load work up I had the 115 doing almost
3100 but it started to open up a bit so I dropped
er back to 3000. Works for me.

Thanks for the info. Where are you getting your primers? They are non-existent around these parts.

All my bullets are coated with Danzac. I picked up
the Russian primers from Bob Jones a couple yrs back. Don't think he handles them anymore. I layed in a good stock and I'm glad I did. The RWS is almost as good as the Russian but my
last lot was a bit soft and showed some pressure signs but worked well. I do use the Rem 9 1/2 for 2-300 yd XTC but they show almost 2 X the SD and I don't use them @ 600-1K.

Reid,
Thanks. I heard that the RWS primers were not consistent, so I stayed away from them. So far I haven't found anything that my setup liked better than plain old WLR in the primer dept. Having said that, I just started to play with RL-15 and 105 gr. pills and the results have been quite promising/impressive. Once I have it all sorted out, I'll post the results.
Thanks,

I'm not sure where you heard about the RWS primers or if something recently has changed but I definitely won't share those views until I see or hear otherwise. I purchased the remaining inventory of Bob Jensen's when he sold Jensens Sporting Goods in Tucson. These he sold because he had begun to import the Russian primers which he and Bob Jones sold and are now sold under the PMC label. I purchased about 10 to 12 lots ranging anywhere from 2500 to 10,000 of each lot. These he considered remnants of much larger lots. This was entirely satisfactory with me. I tested each and every lot in three or more rifles each and no less than 20 shot strings, each chonographed over a 35P and grouped at 500 yrds. I did find some that I would not prefer to shoot at a 1000 only because other lots were so much better. The worst ones exhibited a sd of 12 with most in the 7-8 range. The Russian, I will admit run very similar as do Win and Fed at times but I still prefer the RWS. Having said that, I will also admit that RWS can be difficult to obtain at times.

Allen, I'm with you on the RWS. I have never heard, or experienced, a problem with them except that this last lot of cups are a tad softer than my previous lots. Even though they pucker a bit, with a proven load, they perform well. Until the Russian came along, they were my standard for 600-1K ammo. As you noted the RWS are a cut above the standard USA stuff, although, the CCI BR2 are a very good 'Second Best'. I'd be EXTREMELY INTERESTED in any problems with the RWS. Just like the Russian, the RWS are a tad hard to come by. Fortunately I stashed 15K of the RWS and 20K of the Russian in my bunker. I'm good for another couple barrels. I'm not sure who handles the RWS at present. I got my last bunch from 'Old Western Scrounger' after a considerable wait. It is my understanding that Bob Jones told the Russian to 'Stickt it where the Sun Don't Shine' when they raised the price for the follow on orders. I'd be interested in hearing more on the Russian saga and any problems with the RWS. Bob, are you listing? Hope to see you @ Butner again, real soon. You or Allen wouldn't happen to have a sleve or 2 of the Russian Small Rifle Mag primers stashed away in the dark, would you? Man, those suckers do work in the Rem 308 BR Brass in the Butner Palma matches. Allen, you got any of the 3-03 lot of Russians? Man, those sucker did work.

I made a typical blunder when they were pushing the Russian small rifle mag primers. I had just bought a full case of the reg small rifle pri. and couldn't see the need for additional sr pri. besides that I had no use for anything in sr saying 'Mag'. I only had one rifle at the time that used sr pri and that was a 223 bolt prone rifle. I had immediately experienced the blanking of the pri with what I thought a reasonable load in my rifle when I tried the Russian sr pri. So being the intelligent man I thought I was, I figured it time to have the bolt bushed and a small firing pin installed which I did. I dropped the load 1/2 grain just to be safe. Jones gave me,no lie he really gave me something) a tray of the mag pri to try. I thanked him and never really tried them. When I heard that the only difference was a thicker metal cup, and no difference in the compound, I tried them. Again I saw no difference. When I heard what velocities some were getting with their 80 gr. loads, the light switch flipped. I boosted the load and I obtained similar vel. Now I called Jones and asked for a case of the mag pri. and all he had left was a brick. I bought that and am in the same boat you are in. I also heard Gaft and Sons had some under the PMC label but had no luck in getting any and that was a day after a friend got a case. So if you find any, I would certainly appreciate it if you were to pass that information on to me. Take care,
