6X47 Lapua

I have done a little load work with the 6x47L and found that Varget and H4350 both work well.
40 grns of H4350 averaged 3130 fps using a 205 primer and 105 sencar. It produced very good groups out to 1000yds.
37 grns of Varget also worked well but I prefer the better load density of the H4350.

As for 95 grn bullets I can say that I achieved and average of 3230fps with 90 sencars also with good group results to 500 yds.

Yes theyre pretty hard in the lands.I can´t tell how much because my chamber is a disaster, I get different landmarks because the centering is not properly done.
In the beginning when I had too big bushings I just made them long enough and let the bolt adjust them by the closing force. Because I haven´t yet bought any hi-tech measurment equipment´s I mostly go by the feeling. Sound´s crazy but so far everything has worked out really nice. Now when I´m really in love with this caliber I sure have to get my own reamer and start some serious R&D.
Average speed with the hotter loadings have been 3260fps with 90 Scenars and my barrel is no more than 24". I´ve reloaded the brass more than 20 times but then I went for new ones just in case.Necksize is .261 in the reamer drawings, I haven´t measured what It is in reality.

I anyone else using Varget with 105's in a 6X47L? I would have assumed this is a bit hot for the cartridge, but I'm intrigued. Since both Alliant and VV powders are so damned difficult to find where I am,or in the case of VV are priced so high as to be considered rape $48/lbs.)

I have been using H4350 and the results have been really quite disappointing with a variety of 105->108 bullets.

Varget works quite well in the 6x47L. I currently use H4350 which I find works well in my rifle. The Varget will work out around 3-4 grains less than the H4350 for similar velocity, at least it did for me,although naturally each rifle will be a little different.

37 and 40grs. sounds like alot of powder for that little case; are those max loads for your rifle? Also are those compressed loads. I should get mine in another couple of weeks. hopefully midway will have dies before i get it back. I plan on loading sum 70gr and 87gr BTHP, with both varget and h4350. I think a good starting point for me will be around 34grs. of varget and around 36 of h4350. Man their just isn't very much info on the 6x47 laupa. I'm a worried that i will not be able to reach 3450-3600fps. with 87's so i may just stick with the 70gr. bullets. I am surprised that the 6x47 laupa can get velocities up to 3100fps. with bullets over 100grs. Can't wait to start developing some loads.

1_22250, I have been to 41.0 gr. of H-4350 behind the 105 gr. Berger VLDs with no signs of pressure with .010 jam to land. Did not chrono yet. Bill

I am the same as billmo, have had up to 41 of 4350 no pressure signs but not chronyed yet at 41 grains. I did crony some 90 scenars at 3230-3245 with 40grns H4350.

cheers

I could also get more than 41 grains of H4350 in the case, but it made a bad group even worse. I tried Varget and it was also mediocre.

I was about ready to give up on the 6X47 until I tried N560 and the difference was huge.

I'm a newbie with the 6x47L round, but can say I love it already
40.0 gr of H-4350 is right at too much for my rifle. I would have to say, that if I back the bullet of the lands some, it probably will be just fine as a max load for me. BTW this is a savage action..

34.0 gr of 4831sc is AWESOME!!! with 115 D-TACS.
I managed to get a 3-shot group well into a dime size at 265yds.
The Pac-Nor 1-7.5 twist is working well from 105 Bergers, Amax's to the 115 D-Tacs

I'll try to post pics later...

Hi all!
Relatively new to this forum and I wanted to say I appreciate the depth of experience I see here. Thank you all for your work and for sharing your experiences.

I am a professional firearms trainer and competitive shooter and I shoot all kinds of firearms but mainly handguns. I grew up with rifles and reloading and I am experienced with reloading although I don't have as much experience as I would like with benchrest type reloading equipment or pure benchrest techniques of reloading.

Most of the shooting I do with rifles is either for tactical use, hunting or practical rifle competition that involved simulated hunting/tactical shooting situations with a variety of shooting positions and ranges from 150 - 900 yards.

I have recently had my .308 bolt rifle rebarreled by my friend, Dan Dowling, great guy!) to 6X47 Lapua. Following Dan's advice, we put in a .273 neck diameter,no turn neck) and throated it for mainly 105 gr. bullets although it will seat 115's if I want to go that high.

It is a 26" Hart 1 in 8 twist in a trued Remington 700 action and an HS Precision, Varmint stock.

I will be using this rifle for a variety of purposes but mainly for mid to longer range practical rifle competition out to 900 yards or so.

I have a sponsor relationship with Lapua/Vihtavuori as well as Berger bullets and others and I would like to work up some loads for this rifle/barrel combination that will shoot well.

I have on hand 105 gr. Berger VLDs, 105 gr. Scenars and a handful of 115 gr. DTACs along with some 90 grain Lapua FMJBT bullets.

I have Lapua 6.5 X 47 cases on hand and I also have VVN540, 550, 560, 160 on hand. I will be using Forster 6X47 Lapua dies. I don't have a primer selected yet. I have read several posts talking about CCI BR4's, Remington 7 1/2 etc.

I am willing to try other powder and bullet combinations and see what shoots well if the above combinations don't work as well as hoped.

Some questions I have for all of you are:

What is the current thinking with 6X47 Lapua as far as a long range cartridge?

What powder/bullet combinations seem to shoot the best, using the 105 - 115 grain bullets.

What would be the top end loads as far as pressure/velocity with 105 gr. and 115 gr. bullets?

What kind of velocity can I expect with a 26" barrel vs. the longer barrels most of you are using?

Does anyone have experience with the Hart 1 in 8 twist barrels and will they shoot the 115 gr. DTACs accurately?

Does anyone have any good Varmint loads using lighter bullets in 6X47 Lapua? This would be for coyotes, foxes, bobcats etc.

Thanks for your input!

Ron

Ron,
Here is the results for my rifle. As you can see I easily get 3680 with a 70 grain using either N-550 or varget, I think I will do more shooting with Varget and lighter bullets may be best. The load I setteled on was 41.0 N-550, 88 gr berger FB. This load shoots 3400fps and groups in the .2's ant 300yds. Shot 8 chucks with this bullet to try out effectiveness on varmints and while it is not a Vmax it killed the 8 chucks like turning off a light switch. Longest shot was 300yds. I love this cartridge and new rifle. It pushes bullets as fast as my 6AI but with less powder and more accuracy!

Ron,
I am using a 28" Krieger fluted, with a 1-10 twist. I wresteled with a faster twist for the longer bullets but setteled on 1-10. This allows be to shoot lighter bullets and up to 100 gr bullets. The bullet I have setteled on is a Berger 88 FB. Leaving muzzel at 3400 fps it is travaling at 2600fps at 600 yds!

Tried it on woodchucks and killed them real good. At some point I may want to load some 70 sieara BT at 3700 should be explosive.

Hi Ron,

2 of my loads are 39.4 grains N-160 with 115 DTAC's at 3070 fps in my RFD benchrest rifle with 29.5 inch 8 twist and 38.9 grains R-17 at 3120 fps with 115 Berger thicks in my MAK tube gun tactical rifle with 7 twist.

The RFD is throated way out!Powder might be too compressed for your gun.The tactical rifle is throated for AICS mags and is not compressed.

Thanks Steve,

I appreciate it. I am getting ready to do a bunch of testing with some different powders here shortly and see what the gun can do.

38.0gr of H4350 using 115's worked well
40.0 H4831 with 115's

40.5 of H4350 with any of the 105's have great success..

40.5 N560 with 115's
