6X47 Lapua vs 6BR

Howdy gentlemen,
First post here, though I suspect some friends are around. I'll get to the question, hopefully it hasn't been beat to death already.

It's time for a new 6 (never had a real good one). I am looking at the two calibers mentioned. For components I'm figuring on a Darrel Holland stock (similar to the McMillan BDL or Sako 75), Surgeon RSR, and a Brux #5. That's the size and shape of the rifle. A long range hunting / plinking / varmint type rig, of a handy packing size. I may compete f class or other informal long range comps too.

Mostly, I play around with hunting or hunting type plinking and doggin at 600+. Mostly +.

I don't have any experience with either cartridge (build 'em both, right). I'd like to know velocity difference for 105-115 type bullets. I'd like to know difference in barrel life. Real or imagined difference in accuracy. And any other reason I might pick one over the other.

Thanks for the input. I know I'm not a BR guy, but you folks know the most about these calibers... I think ;)

Upon owning a 6x47 and shooting against 6br's I can tell you my observations. The 6br is more accurate hands down. However the 6x47 will get more velocity using heavier bullets and will stand out for longer distances beyond 600yds and will generally rule the roost in the 1000yd circle.2950fps is about tops for a 6br with 105's and a 6x47 will push a 115 at about 3000fps. Hope this helps you decide. Both are excellent cartridges

If it's a hunting rig I'd opt for the bigger cartridge for deer sized game. If your going to magazine load it then the 6X47L again since it will feed better. Also as far as mag loading goes remember those VLD like being jammed so that may hamper you for mag loading unless you opt for non VLD bullets.
For target work out to 600 yards I'd say the 6BR hands down.

grit,

Like Danny said, if you want a magazine the 6 x 47L would be the round. The 6BR is the go to round for accuracy, the BR can feed, but sometimes not in some guns. If you want more speed than the BR, look at the 6BRX or the 6 Dasher ( 6BR Imps). I have friends with PD kills out 1300 yds with a Dasher shooting 115gr,and past 1000yds with a 6BR shooting 105 hornaday amax, and 900 yds with a 6BR 12tw shooting 70gr bullets.

The Imps do take fireforming, but that is not problem.

Thanks, this is exactly the feedback I want. So, hunting is definetely priority. Definetly want a magazine / repeater. And 1000 yard performance is more important to me than 600 yards or less. Also 90% of my shooting will be off a bipod and rear bag. The 6X47L seems the winner at this point.

Any guesses at difference in barrel life, assuming top loads for both?

How about ease of load development?

Looking at the 111 Dtacs. Any input here?

There are no 111 Dtacs. no longer made. I have the last 600 there was..

The 105 amax is a good bullet for hunting too. I use it in my 6x47L.

Very good for deer and antelope.

my specs:

Stiller Predator action
Stiller 20 MOA rail
Krieger 7.5 twist light palma barrel at 26"
Jewell HVR at 15 oz.
McMillan Classic stock
HS bottom metal
Cerakote black

I am gonna put a 2.5-10x32 on it though to shave a pound and still have great NF repeatability !

It's Scott, I believe (LRH), right? Thanks for the info. That's a great looking rig. Very similar to my components.

I too am thinking a lighter / smaller scope. I wish I could get the NP R1 reticle in any scope. I'm not at all sure what to do here. I'd prefer higher X than 10.

Hey Sendero!

That rifle looks familiar.

Just to let you guys know I only got 2400 rounds out of my last 6x47L barrel. It started showing signs of fading accuracy at 2000 rounds.

I was running 115B's at 3100fps.

6BR is as accurate a cartridge as you will find and it will shoot well beyond 1000 yards with 105-108 bullets.

My PERSONAL experience with the 6X47L was that it was finicky as hell, and in the end it was most accurate at the same speeds as my BR's shooting the identical bullets. Why use 25% more powder to do exactly the same thing?

I got 115's to work, but at unimpressive velocities.

The BR is so damned easy to make work really really well. I know the 6X47 has worked very well for many, but after two tries/guns, I'm done.

Obtunded ,

I've heard that from others as well.

I've only owned one 6br.It was as accurate as my 6x47's but not more so.

My guns are throated for 115's and yes they have required tuning a load but not any more than other cartridges I've owned.

Alinwa on benchrest central wrote a long post about tips on gettin maximum accuracy with 6x47L.Part of that was necking down from 6.5x47L and setting the shoulder for a tight bolt close on the first firing.I think that is one of the most important things to do for squeezing accuracy out.Getting the cases to fireform true.

I'm not a benchrest shooter and mostly shoot tactical rifle now.So .3-.4" groups are what I strive for.IMO,to obtain consistently tighter groups than that requires proper tracking of the stock in the bags.

i didn't find my 6x47L finkey to reload for at all. for starters i decided on a 1-10" twist, hopefully to stabilize the 70-85grn. bullets. my first loads with a sierra mk 70hpbt shot very well even out to 200yrds(.5" moa easy) with all charges of 4350. after swithching to varget and 85gr. hpbt i fell in love with my rifle. i'm currently at 37grains of varget and .010" from the lands and can get groups well under .5" all day. i never fl sized my lapua brass, but i think im gonna since rounds are a tight fit. maybe that's why i've had good luck with it. i'll soon find out, but havent really shot it all that much since i found my load.

hope this helps.
