6x47 Lapua improved? Maybe the next project.

I am thinking of a 6x47 as my next project. It will be built on a Remington VSF as a platform. Probably a 10 twist barrel as I want to shoot the 75-90 grain bullets. .272 neck as I do not want to turn necks. Are any of you guys shooting one of these yet on a Varmint/predator gun? Since I will be ordering a reamer what about going with a 40 degree shoulder as well? Curious if you increase the powder capacity of this case if it will create ignition problems with the small primers/flash hole? Another option with the lapua brass is just going with the 243 AI, already proven and dies readily available. Looking for opinions and suggestions. I am leaning towards the 6x47 improved as I have not heard of anyone building one as of yet.

Thanks!

Andy

You'll have to get custom dies for a 6x47 Lapua Improved. A .272" neck is a little close. My 6.5 x47 Lapua brass, necked down to 6mm measures right around .270", and .001" per side does not leave much of a cushion if there's any irregularity in the neck wall thinckess.

I ordered 6x47 Lapua finisher & resize reamers from Dave Kiff several months ago. Have chambered only two bbls. & made one FL size die with them to date. The last Graf & Son sale flier had Forster/Bonanza's excellent BR FL sizers for 6x47 at a dealer price of $23, so I doubt I'll go to the trouble to make another custom die. In fact, I bought two of the Bonanza FL dies, and have been using one on my own brass - the other will go to the customer who ordered a complete rifle in this chambering.

So far, I've seen very little or no increase in velocity out of my 27" 6x47 over what my 29" & 30" Dashers produce. The main differences,at least in this bbl.) are that the brass costs 11 cents more than Lapua's BR brass, and it takes 5grs. or more extra powder to produce Dasher velocities with bullets in the 105-115gr. range. To date, my 6x47 hasn't shot as good as the worst of my three Dashers, so I'm slightly more than somewhat disillusioned with it. There's always the possibility that I got a stinker of a barrel - once I finish the 2nd 6x47 and get it into the hands of the customer who ordered it, we'll have a bit broader base of experience to base an opinion of the cartridge on.

Sounds like your using powder that is to fast.

I'm shooting one with a Dasher neck and shoulder on it. Use Dasher dies held off, works great. It is definately a lot faster than any Dasher. The 6.5x47 is an excellent, incredibly strong case.
Are you looking for one that is more of an Ackley Improved with the neck/shoulder in the same place or a more improved version with the neck/shoulder pushed up?

+1..........and the small primer gives a heck for strong case. I'd consider moving the neck shoulder junction back a smidge or two for a longer neck then adjust freebore accordingly to shoot lighter bullets kissing or more and still have ability for some heavyweights - if it will be a "do all" rig.
If dedicated mid to long range with heavies, then not necessary. There may be something to burying the turbulence point for bbl wear. We're running a modded 6XC, long neck and have found out RL 17 is HARD on our bbl. Fire cracking after 400 rds. But it will push'em right smart (107 Sierras, 3100+) and very, very accurate - in the ones and twos and not in the best of conditions.

Ah crap I just looked at the original date on this thread, this is 10 years old. The OP hasn't even been on line in 2 years...

A friend of mine and I each had a 6x47 Lapua improved chambered by Clarence Hammonds in Red-Lion Pa. We both have 9 twist barrels and they are used mostly for groundhog hunting, although my friend does take deer with his also. His deer bullet is the 95gr. Berger and for groundhogs he uses the 87gr. V-Max. I only use mine for groundhogs and I use the 80gr. Berger varmint bullet.

Clarence is listed on the gunsmith page if you want to contact him about it.
