6x47 Lapua Ballistics

Does anyone know what the ballistics are for the 6x47 Lapua shooting lighter bullets,60-80)gr? All the specs I find are for the heavier bullets,95-107)gr.
Considering this caliber for a new varmint rifle. It should have the inherient accuracy of the 6br but more case capacity, hoping to drive 70gr at 3600-3700. Another plus would be easy to assemble brass from 6.5x47 Lapua.

Any input welcome

Thanks

Typically the twist in the 6-47 barrels are bored with a tight twist 1 - 8 to accomadate heavy bullets. You would need a 1 - 14 twist for the lighter bullets but I think you would need to slow them down to get the whole accuracy picture that you are looking for. Hope this helps. Bill

Was wanting to experment with the 6x47 using lighter bullets for coyotes. I took a Winchester Heavy Varmint surplus barrel made by Wilson in 243 I bought off Gunbroker. Cut it to 24.5 and rethreaded it to a Remmy. These are 10 twist. Shoots way better than I ever imagined so far but must have misplaced or forgot to write data where it was supposed to go. Tried H4350 at 41, 42, 42.5gr. with RP 71/2 and 70 TNT. Only one I can find now is with 42.5 and velocity was 3357 with an SD of 15. Accuracy for 3 shots has been .5 and better on most groups. Did some 77 lapua at 40gr but cannot remember if I chronoed them and cannot find info if I did.

Anywho there was some room to go with this but don't think 3600 will happen. Perhaps 3500? Wanted to try some 65VMax but haven't gotten it done yet. My 8 twist Krieger at 26" was 3090 with nekkid 107SMK, H4350 and limited testing so far.

Heck, I have friends who have gotten to over 3,500 with 70s in a straight 14" twist, 24" long 6BR. With the right powder, I think that you can reach your goal, just take it easy, work up gradually, and keep on the lookout for pressure signs.

Guys, thanks alot! I may have to go to a 6/284 for the velosity I want or 6mmAI. Just hate fireforming brass :-)

Any inut as to the gunsmith you woould use to build a varmint gun?

Thanks again

I think I would go to the 6mm AI, or .243 AI before the 6 .284 since it is more than a little hard on barrels, and if I wanted to take full advantage of these, for longer shots, I would step up to a higher BC medium weight bullet, and the twist that it required.

I worked up some loads for my 6x47 Lapua so far it's dath on groundpigs and coyotes.

Take a look...... http://www.varmintsforfun.com/6x47lapua.html

SnakeEye--

Great report! How do you like the BAT three-lug action. They're in high demand among the Benchrest crowd, but usually in a Right Bolt, Left Port configuration.

On your website, I noticed on your 6-6.5x47 case a line about .100 down from the body/shoulder junction. Is that just a scratch from the chamber?

That line is from rattling around in the ammo box. At first I didn't like the 3 lug because it would gall when working the bolt. I lubed it with silcone and kept working it. Now it is slick as glass. I wanted the left port but couldn't get it when I happened on to this action. So far the gun shoots very well.

I have a 6x6.5x47 with Krieger 1x8 twist 28" barrel and with 39 grns H4350 for 105 VLD Bergers it shoots 1/4 " 5 shot groups pretty regularly. I use 88grn High BC Bergers for long range prairie dogs and use 39 grns of RL-15 with same 5 shot 100yd groups.Of course these results depend on me reading the flags correctly and not slapping the trigger. The 105's chrono at 2985-3025 ft/sec depending on primer,Fed. and Win) and the 88's @ 3375

I agree with Boyd. The 6Br will make 3500++ with a 70 gr B-tip. The 6X47 Lapua should be able to best that mark with the same bullet. I have a case that is about the same as the 6x47 and have made 3650 with the b-tips, and it's a starting load. It made small holes so never tried to stretch the velocity.

Thanks for all the input! I decided on the 6x47 Lapua. Bat action with a Krieger 1-10 twist that should shoot up 100gr ok.
My decision was arrived at by weighing the loss of only 100 fps or so from the 6mmAI with 80-90 gr bullets and no fire forming! The additional accuracy it capable off is the kicker. I think it will make a great 600-800yd varmint rig.

I am still looking for lt wt bullet load data for 68-87gr bullets. any more help out there?

Thanks
Stosh

I don't have any chrono data for this load but it does very well in a 7.5 twist 6x47L. 90gr. Berger BT with 37.5 grs. H4831SC & Rem. 7 1/2 primer.

SnakeEye - That's a fine-looking varmint rig - looks like you got the 3L with the integral recoil lug. I'm in the process of fitting & chambering barrels for my 2 BAT 3L actions - one with the lug, the other w/o. Ordered the integral lug action with an ejector, as I intend to use it for both LR prone & 1000yd. BR.
The 2nd action came from Bruno's; in that case, I more or less had to take what was available, which is why it doesn't have the integral lug or ejector. I finished fitting & chambering a #14 Krieger 9-twist in 284W on the 1st action last week, and am trying to decide whether to use the 6mm #14 8-twist I ordered for this project, or go with one of the 7.8 or 7.5-twist #15 blanks I have on hand for the 2nd bbl., which will be chambered for the 6x47L.

Your statement about the lugs galling on your 3L is what got my attention - did it gall with the copper-based anti-seize grease BAT uses on the lugs, or had you wiped that stuff off and used something else? I'm kinda wondering whether to leave the copper stuff on, or clean it off and use NECO MolySlide on mine. The stock for the 284 is supposed to be here today, and I'm going to go to work bedding it if it does show up. The Kelbly trigger is installed, and all the other parts are here, so as soon as the bedding is finished & cured, it's going to the range. Oh yeah, forgot to mention that both my actions are also SS, and I got the same sloped scope rail from BAT for the 1st action that yours has. The guys at BAT know their stuff.

I just cleaned it as normal. Tried a dry lub but it galled still. The reason it was galling is because the bolt and action are machined to a very tight fit. I sprayed the bolt only, with silcone and started working it back and forth until it would start galling again. I repeated the silcone again. Seemed to losen a bit. Went to the range to work up some more loads and after about 50 more rounds the galling just disappeared. Now it is slick as glass, I'm glad cause I love my Bat's!! I just wish it was a left port!

You wouldn't be selling that fine rifle would you? I want to go to a smaller caliber.
