6X47 Lapua / 105-115g load suggestions

Hello, I have a 2ndhand 6X47 Lapua. 26" Palma contour (Krieger) 1/7.5
Twist throated for longer projectiles. Everything about this rifle is top notch.
Seller did not provide targets nor load data, nor was it the most pleasant transaction, so info there is nil. I have tried only VVN550 ( works great in my
Other 6X47 1/8tw) So far no good in this one, using 105g amaxes. I have tried
37.0g, 37.5g 38.0g. 37 is best...does a faster twist create more pressure? 37 g
Is 1/2" group @ 100 yds. None have pressure signs...Seems like more powder opens up groups w/o question, and 37.0g seems like a light load from what I read here and elsewhere online.... Anyone recommend other powders? Loads? This rifle built by Jon Beanland. Using new brass, CCI 450's. I also have DTACS 115's to try. Info appreciated, or links to other loads data...thx.

I run a healthy dose of H4350 and the 105 grain A-Max with a Remington 7 1/2 cap in my PacNor 3 groove 8tw 788 action. Shoots real good and can't wait for the weather to warm up so I can stretch its legs! Yours sounds like a nice build and I would forget any sour taste left by the deal! ;) FYI, I am amazed by the caliber and have a feeling mine will see lots of field and bench time.

My 105 a-max load is 39 gr Re17 lapua brass and WSR primers

My 115 gr berger VLD load is 35 Re17 lapua brass and WSR primers

Tried H4350 but Re17 was more accurate for me so stuck with it. Goodluck with your rifle Jon is an awesome builder I love my 6x47.

My accuracy node was a litte lighter on powder - 35.7 grains of VV550. Not really where I want to be velocity wise. I've found mine to be a bit fussy and not really easy to find top accuracy. I remember someone reporting VV560 was the powder that made theirs come alive. Haven't trid RE-17 yet as time is my enemy.

Thanks for the specific info, it is appreciated. Ok 2 more powders to try...& I will. Glad to sacrifice some speed for accuracy, too lazy to drag out my chrono as
I have been fortunate to find info here that gets me dialed in fast. I'll post some info when I get closer...

I'm using 42 grains of H-4831 with 115DTACS, CCI450 primers, getting 3010 fps out of a 26" 7.5 twist Schneider 5P. On my 3rd barrel now. SD in the 6's, perfect load density. The last 5 shot group I shot with 2200 rounds through the barrel was .28".

I used to use R17, didn't like the temp sensitivity or barrel life.

N160 worked well on my first barrel.

As far as I know all double based (Nitroglycerin/Nitrocellulose) powders are temp sensitive to some degree.

From mid summer to mid winter I chronoed a 70 fps swing in temp with R-17. H-4831 has had a 25 fps swing so it stays in the FPS range/barrel node for the most part.

I shoot a match where we engage steel targets, 20 different distances from early morning to mid afternoon, year around. My hit ratio has improved dramatically since I switched to Hodgdon Extreme powders. I have won this event the last 2 years and broke the course record twice.

All out velocity goes to R-17 but be prepared to bump the charge up or down .2-.3 grains as temp dictates to stay in the node.

Mine likes 4831 sc with a 105 berger .. I started at 39 g and ended with 42 being the best it only had a es of 11 and the last group measured at.241 that was a five shot group .. I also tried R 17 and n 550 with no luck .. Also I was not happy with the d tacs I bought for it . They didn't shoot at all

Interesting to read. I have been hoarding my H4831sc for my 6.5X284. May have to dip into it.
hard to find powders of late...

OK, thought I'd post a report. This 6X47 Lapua rifle either does not like 105Amaxes, or I have not hit on the right combination, probably my lack of thorough testing. My groups, using IMR4350, VV N550 averaged .500-.600", always had 1 flier w 105's, a sign of not quite stabilized...?

Tried instead 87g Vmaxes, as I want to use this rifle for live varmints, no target bullets considered. The only really good group I have so far. 5 @ 125 yd. prone, bipod /triad rear bag. red dot is .750. 4 + 1...

VV N550 41.0g, CCI 450 mag primer, 2.580" COAL (jump over .125"), new brass f/l sized 1 pass w. 269" bushing. Cases run 2X thru Sinclair mandrel after sizing. Runout loaded rds. .002" avg. No case weighing, or flashhole prep, nor bullet comparator. All you folks who don't want your 87g Vmaxes, send them my way.. :)

I run either H4350 or H4831SC in mine under either the Berger 108 BTs, or the 115 DTACs from a 27" 7.5 twist. I have had such good results with the H4350 and 4831SC I never felt the need to test RL-17.

I live in Arizona where temp swings from morning to afternoon are in the 40 degree range , I have never had a problem with RL-17 . But then I tune my loads at a half way temp that meets these temp swings . Also I have not seen any difference when using H4350 or H4831SC both " extreme temp " powders in this caliber . N550 is also an excellent powder and I have not had any problems with it at extreme temp variations . With all that said , it sounds like you have not reached a load tuned to this rifle . Some barrels require a lot more tuning than others . My suggestion is to stay with N550 if you have a large enough quantity of it , because it would be for nought if you only had a pound or two after going through all the work of tuning a load . My thought is that powders along with a lot of other reloading components do not get the attention to quality and consistency like they used to :'( !!

Hi LCazador,

I live up in Flagstaff and the match I'm referring to in my earlier post on this thread is in the Ashfork area.

http://www.azprc.org/

Please don't take my post as coming off with arrogance or as a attack. You and I'm sure many others on this forum are probably a much better shot than I am. I'm just trying to make a point is all.

A little about the AZPRC. The majority of our steels are approximately 1.5MOA in size and past 500Y, each steel is engaged twice, first round hits are worth 10 points vs 5 points for a second round hit. We don't get any sighters in our game, so having a perfect zero, "knowing exactly how fast our load is going", knowing the "actual" BC of the bullet, having our dope tuned perfect, using density altitude and slope angle, all come together to make a big difference in our scores. Throw in some wind and these steels are not easy to hit. Sadly, we've had more than a few shooters that consider themselves rifleman come out and not even hit a single target.

This is why I switched to H-4831SC . IMO, without a doubt there is enough difference in temp stability with double based powders and single based low temp sensitivity powders to warrant not having to worry about how fast my load is going on a particular day. For me the days are gone of hitting slightly low or slightly high and getting into the edit mode on my droid shooter ballistic program trying to adjust velocity so my dope will line up like it should ;D

Latest report on 6x47 Lapua / 105 Amax....Tried several loads suggested, best was RL-17, until
I tried Hodgdon Hybrid 100V- photo. 40.0g, CCI450 primer, cases f/l sized .269" bushing, cases annealed & trimmed to 1.840" prior. OAL 2.665". All loads shot to same spot on paper, fwiw

I have never used this powder before. first load ever is pictured. This is a hunter style rifle, prone, bipod, rear squeeze bag 100 yds. No chrono info...

I run 42.1 to 42.2 with the H4831SC and 105s or 39.5-39.7 H4350 in 26" McGowen. Russian primers for H4350 and white box 41 mil specs for H4831SC. Just screwed on a new brux and excited to have two.

I should give report -- I had no great success with my groups, until I happened,
By chance to SWITCH bipods shooting my various loads. Last groups (no photos ) were with
my plain old Harris, and they were tiny. Hybrid 100V looked great, 40.0g,
105 amaxes. bipod switch was the difference...
Gee that sounds like a big excuse, but the " tactical" bipod made for F class
Really was the culprit...

I have ahunter style and a bench gun custom builds. Same reamer. I shoot 40.5 H4350 with a CCI Bench rest primer. Both guns love it. Shoots better than I can.
