6x45 re-chamber or re-barrel?

I have a Savage 10 in 6x45 w/ a 1:12 Shilen match grade 24" stainless barrel that I can not achieve better than 1.25" @ 100 yards using Benchmark, H335, BL-C(2), H322 or H4895 with a 70gr SMK. I would like to use this rifle for light varmint hunting out to 300 yards. Can this barrel be re-chambered to .243 WIN or a necked up 22-250? Which one would give me the best performance and longest barrel life? Thanks for all your comments.

Ron

PS. I have all the parts to convert this rifle, it was originally a .308

Can't make it a 22-250, the barrel is .243 not .22. Depending on how much of the fat part of the barrel is left. Might be able to cut and rechamber to .243. Go see a Gunsmith. Maybe that barrel just doesn't like 70 gr. bullets. Try another bullet.

it would be very easy to rechamber it to a 243 or 6/250. but if you have a bad barrel then all you will be doing is keeping the 1.25" groups but with more velocity. if the barrel has a good crown then the 6x45 should easily shoot in the .4xx's or better. i would try to improve what you have now, and i would start with the bullet. give the 75gr vmax a try.

How many pills down the pipe? My smith does not recommend a re-chamber if over 1200, because there will usually be substantial fire cracking. Before you do anything, get it borescoped.

Try some Win.748. Also, in my 6x45, primer selection makes one heck of a difference. And again, try a different bullet.

Go with another bullet, you can't force feed it what you want to shoot.

I'd look at the 55 grain Ballistic Tip first. I've never not had that bullet shoot.

Guys, thanks for your quick responces. I have not tried the 75gr Vmax bullets yet but I will and I do have about a half pound of 748. The barrel has about 500 rounds through it. I also have some Nosler 55gr spitzers that I tried also but will look at the ballistic tips too. The crown is good but if it does not improve.......

Ron

Winchester Small Rifle Primers have been the best 'match' for 748, at least in my rifle. PMCs' are the worst, Rem. is so-so, with the excellent results WSR has given I haven't even tried Federal primers. Shooting the 75g. V-Max or 80g. Blitz.
