6SLR vs 6CM

Question...
I am about to chamber in either 6CM or 243AI, I would like to go with a shorter barrel so I could tote it around easier in my E.Stock GS2 and be just a bit lighter over all. My Kreiger HV will finish at 28. I was wondering generally how much speed you loose per inch down to say 22" in the mentioned chamberings? Thank's for your help.....Rick

I am looking at the last post thinking - - Why would you go with an AI or an improved type case for a 6mm if you're just going to shoot a short barrel? Seems to me your just going to blow a lot of extra gas out of the muzzle without getting any more velocity out of it - - maybe I am missing something but I don't think so.

My barrel is a 6mm, my brass is 243Lapua. It was just a question based on 2 things 1) I am obviously new at this and 2) Those are the 2 reamers I have at my disposal that fits my barrel and brass. It was just a thought, like I said my barrel will finish at 28 if that would be the best for the chambering. A 6" shorter barrel isn't going to make or break my back carrying it around thats for sure. I thank your input....I learn something new every day about my new hobby.

Rick, I'm not sure how much speed would drop off in the 6CM going from 28" to 22". For certain types of shooting, I believe the 28" would be more beneficial then a 22" would be. I think, this is me personnaly, If it is for Tactical, F/Class/ Benchrest = 28". If for Hunting period, maybe 22", and you may have to shoot a faster burning powder then H-1000.

Yeah...I'm sure I will be sticking with the 28 so I can burn the slower ( more barrel friendly ) powders. Not a hunting rig. A few places around here where you have to do some hoofing to get to various spots to shoot. The E.Stock GS2 works great for that and can handle a longish gun just fine. But shorter ones better. Not willing to cut the nuts off either chambering.....Thank's for the input...Rick

I just finished a load development session tonight shooting 107gr SMKs out of a 24" carbon fibre wrapped Benchmark barrel. I was getting 3140 fps with 43gr of RL17 with phenomenal accuracy so far and no pressure signs but I don't think I'm far off. Chambering is a 6slr btw. Hope that helps

I have been shooting the 6CM for several years.

For me, it works perfect. I use H1000, 115 DTACs, Lapua and Win brass.

I am using a mag fed rifle and the 30' shoulder still allows easy feeding.

One of these days I will have a AR-10 barrel chambered for it to stick in my OBR.

I would not recommend a 6CM or .243 Imp 30Ëš using H1000 in an AR-10 - - that powder has such a slow burn rate that your port pressure will be so high (even with an extended gas port) your gun will hammer itself very hard when cycling unless you have a puny little gas port - - and if you have a little gas port like that, then the rifle will be marginal for cycling properly with other powders like H4831SC or H4350 - - been there, done that. I have an AR-10 upper that I set up for use with H1000 and it won't even cycle properly with H4350 and with H4831SC it is marginal, yet it cycles pretty hard with H1000. For an AR-10, set it up to work with faster powders than H1000 and stay there - - besides, H1000 generates a huge muzzle blast and a lot more recoil because of the sheer extra volume of gas being expelled from the muzzle of the rifle - - just the wrong set up for the application IMO.

I think most that shoot gas guns in comps would port the barrel for the load they use not just drill a port and see how it works. Adjustable gas blocks and gas block sleeves are other options to adjust the carrier speed and I'm positive Hoser knows how to handle it.
