6SLR questions

Size it and fire it first. Then, worry about trimming. SLR brass doesn't grow much.

2.045" max legnth, same as .243 Winchester case.

Doubt that my cases will ever get there from what I'm seeing so far.

This is from Robert Whitley:

Max Case and Trim Length for Brass Cases

There is no formal established max case or trim lengths for the brass. The author suggests the following for guidelines:

Max Case Length: 2.036"

Trim Length: 2.026"

+1 After 2 firings my cases are close enough to each other I don't know that I'll ever have to trim them?

Gents, a question please. I've been running a .243, chambered to load 105 Amax so the base of the bullet is above the neck/shoulder junction. I've been using H4350 to give a Mv of 2925fps through an 8 twist, 24" long Border barrel. I have 1100 rounds down the barrel now and have experienced a loss in velocity that having bore scoped it I think is down to copper fouling. However the throat is fire cracked as is the first 4" of the barrel. Accuracy wise its still a solid 1/2moa but I think it is on its way out. So my question is this. I really enjoy the 6mm but how much extra barrel life will a 6SLR give over a std .243 if running at similar Mv's .
Thanks.

I haven't shot out a barrel yet; but I'll bet you that RussT and/or MattKubic have, and can answer your question.

The neck angle on the SLR will increase barrel life over the stock 243 from what I'm seeing..

I'm at ~2,900 rounds. My X-count is down, some shots off-call. Measured the throat Saturday. Went from about .006" throat growth at 1,800 rounds to Completely out of the case at 2,900 rounds. Wow! 45.5gr N165 for 3,145fps average through the life of the barrel. Still holds the 10-ring at 600yds though.

Not sure if I want to set this one back or just screw a new barrel on.

My first SLR barrel went over 2500 before we set it back at the end of a season. It still shot very well. We set it back and also machined a new barrel. The setback barrel was bore scoped recently and it's pretty rough for about 4", so I suspect it was just ready to go about the time it got set back.

That first barrel was my learning curve barrel. I shot it hot as heck and didn't know any better, so I'm pretty tickled it lasted as long as it did.

My current barrel has a lot more care taken with it. It has about 600 rounds down it and it still looks great. I've been using a slightly slower powder (7828) than my previous barrel, but another 100 fps so it may be a wash. I'm expecting at least 2500 out of this one.

Hope this helps...good luck

3000 seems to be what most get. Or there abouts depending on the style of shooting and powder use. Frankly my current barrel has between 2400 and 2500 on it and was still going strong. I just took it off and set the shoulder back to see how much longer it will go. I am expecting over 3000 rounds but am a little hesitant to say until it goes out for sure. This barrel ate a lot of H4831SC plus a lot of faster powders with a higher potential of Heat so it was pretty abused. With many Rapid Fire strings.

Well, now I'm scrambling. Going to try to get a new barrel back on and get it lined out for Phoenix.

I'm thinking on this next barrel, I'll set it back around 2,100 ~ 2,200 rounds and see what happens.

Looking thru it with a bore-scope, this current barrel should work for a 6X45 after cut down. I picked up a Mod 7 action on the Brownell's special. There's a lot of rifling left when you get away from the throat area.

What's the load area for N160 and/or H-1000? Only have about a lb left of the N165. I have 8 lbs of both but was tickled with the N165 so never tried the others.

Thanks for all the reply's. I'm amazed at the barrel life of the 6slr compared to a std .243.
What amount of increase in group size is the cut off point for considering a barrel shot out?

I usually figure mine is going south when it still groups good at 600 but I start getting unexplained fliers at 800 to 1000+yds. I just got my SLR back at Christmas from getting rebarreled. It started life as a 6XC and at 1800+ I had it rechambered to the SLR and shot nothing but H1000 in it. I pulled the barrel at just over 3200rds (Total) and it was still shooting half MOA at 600yds but started to open up down range.

My initial load testing showed great results with 105 Berger's and H4831SC I also have a load with 7828 that shot well. I will try some H1000 next to see how it does. It will be hard to beat the H4831SC load. Shooting off the hood of my PU it shot two groups into 1.6 and 1.4"s at 300yds but 4 out of one group were in a .656 and 4 out of the other group were in .988 and this was in a quartering 3 to 6mph wind. (Calm day for SD) Ha

What would be your preference given your experience between 6xc and slr. Also have you shot a 6x47Lapua?
