6slr brass options

I recently tore apart my 1st slr I had built, it shot really well, but I wanted to upgrade actions since I had the opportunity and really make the gun a bit better with other improvements.

I was using straight 243 win win brass, it was doing ok tell later on where the pockets were not hold the primer tight and I had a couple near case head separations. In this new build I want to start off with all cases neck turned, length trimmed and all prepped as best as I can. The brass I wave been looking at and wondering if it is good or not is starline 243 brass. I can pick up 250 pcs for 125$ if it is Winchester quality or better I may try it, but I would like to try something a bit better than the win brass going around now. What about nosler brass as well?

Thanks guys for all the help

Not a thing wrong with Winchester brass, and Starline is no better..
Case head separations are from poor sizing and all makes of brass will do it..
Nosler brass is to pricy to suit me....

I'd sell you some Rem 243 brass, need to count, but about 490 formed slr, with 170 unfired and primed, the rest once fired. Then another 490 or so new.

When you guys are sizing, are you taking a piece and pushing the shoulder down just enough to chamber or just throw it in and size it down? I got the original dies from whidden, set them up and ran all my brass through.

I am guessing now after the case problems, I need to really spend time setting the die up so the brass sits against the face of the bolt tight so the brass doesn't stretch.

Preacher, have you shot or known someone shooting the starline?

You need to set the die so it just chambers a case with just enough sizing to allow it to be able to feel it close in the chamber..
I like to have the bolt close about about half way down before it stops on it's own..
I use Starline for my 454 Casull loads, and 7 mm Mauser, and some 6.5x55 cases...
It has worked out good for those..
Not the best weights or neck diameters though...
I trim and check weights so it don't really matter..

I've got 14 firings on my Winchester brass, no issues what so ever, best that I've used.

PPU .243 brass, little thicker and heavier but it's working well also, 200 of those have been fired 18 times.

Edited to say that the PPU Brass has to have the neck turned due to the doughnut

Since there is not really a headspace spec for a 6SLR there is a fair chance that any two can have decidedly different headspace. You need to size 5 new cases and shoot them in the rifle. Measure the shoulder, then set your die up to push back to this measurement. Once fired brass will still not have stretched to full chamber size. If you size to that dimension your brass will chamber fine and will not stretch further.

If you got head separations you were pushing the shoulder way to far back.

Thank you EX that is what I was needing to figure out. On the next build when I get all the brass I will do that.

I shoot 6mm Competition Match barrels where you fire form brass. I have Winchester brass with over 20 firings on them. Never have I lost a primer to loose pockets.

I still have not completely decided which brass to use. I talked to Robert Whitley's son today at the shop looked into a full-length bushing die from them since I have had problems with the other guys I've been using talked about brass and the work that goes into them, and I don't think it will really be much more work than what I am expecting to produce good brass.

I would like to try some good grass like Nosler I believe it is made by Norma deluca's just a little expensive but maybe if I can find a deal I will try some.

I already have a k and m neck Turner I will just need to get the inside cutting die or mandrel.
