6ppc twist rate ??

I have a 13.5 twist on my LV barrel but I am looking at a HV build and it seems I have two options. 13.5 or 14 twist. Is there really much difference in them for the 6PPC for a HV rifle?

I think those two will be by far the most common suggestions and really hard to say one is better than the other. I've gone to 12 twists and I don't foresee going back to the 13.5-14 twists.

Yes, it's counter to conventional "wisdom", but testing is how we know stuff and how I've come to this conclusion...for myself.

Nothing wrong with going with what is most popular but truth is, that's exactly why a lot of other stuff never gets thoroughly tested, too. My honest opinion is that I think the 12 is a tiny advantage but gives the ability to test a bit wider array of bullets as well. Either way, one bbl does not give conclusive results to such a test and if ya can't shoot the difference...there isn't one. My best results in national level matches has been with a 12 twist, so there. Lol! But I completely understand why anyone does what the majority does, too. Wear out a few dozen bbls testing and the cream will rise to the top.

If you're happy with the 13.5 tw , and have the same reamer and gunsmith that chambered it then stick with the 13.5. You might be able to use the same or similar components with both of them. (??). JME.WD

I think mine is a 14 twist Kriger and the guy who helped me get it and set it up told me to not use bullets over 65 grains. Is that right or is there some fudge room. I'd like to load some boat tails and make a load for 200yds or maybe even 300yds.

They shoot 68’s just fine.

Thats what I thought, doesn't Bart make a 68 grain boat tail? Mine came with a load for the 65 grain Berger that was discontinued for the column bullet, I have 3 or 4 boxes of them to shoot before I need bullets. If I am going to have to develop a new load it will be for one of Bart's boat tails. If he does in fact make one that my 14 T will stabilize.

Mostly Larry Moore's 68 fb or his 80 fb. He has since stopped making bullets, to my understanding. I've still got several of both, fortunately. I won the 2019 UBR nats shooting his 68's and have won a couple of national yardages with his 80's. Real hard to say that one is better than the other and that's across several bbls..maybe 10 or so, all 12 twists. Mostly ABC bbls. I give a very slight edge to the 80's at 200-300 but even that's hard to say for sure. I don't fault anyone for staying with a 13.5-14 but I have been around the br game long enough to recognize when something works well for me and I plan to stay with the 12's...fwiw.

I bought some of those hillbillies and did real well them. I then bought a second bbl from Brad in straight 6br 12 twist. Both bbls shot great. I shot my first 10x score targets with those bbls. Shot lots of groups in one's and shot some zero's, learned to tune betrer. Iv since moved into shooting ppc and 30br for short range score, but It never crossed my mind to try ppc in a 12 twist. I'm sure it would work like you said.
Might even be my next project. We'll, I got my first dasher in the works so that will have to wait but still. I haven't competed a ton at 200 and 300 to have a good opinion on 80 trainers over 68s at that distance. Both work, Maybe 80s could give an advantage in the wind for score 200 ,and 300 matches. I guess it depends on what you got and what you want to make work.

I've been told its not the weight of the bullet but the length of the bearing surface that determines the proper twist rate?????? The weight is just along for the "ride".

I've done a pretty good bit of this kinda testing now and I think there's a point where twist becomes detrimental but that it's not as critical as a lot view it as. There are several variables at play and since it's hard for me to say that an 80 is better or worse than a 68 at 200-300...I'm not sure I'd chase that rabbit very far. Instead, just shoot what works best in your 12, 13-14 twist bbl. Properly throated, you can shoot both in a 12 but not in the slower twists. But yes, I think the 80's have a TINY edge at 200-300. The problem is that I've gotta be able to shoot the difference or, it's not a difference at all. They have simply been too close to call, with me on the trigger and in 12 twist bbls.

So, I THINK they are a bit better at 200-300 and they should be...but if I pull the trigger at the wrong time, I'll be cussing either weight bullet. Lol! It ain't gonna fix that! I wish it would, though. Bottom line, I think the 12 twist might give a tad better bc with 68's but short range ain't a bc contest. It's really close. Too close for me to call, so I ain't tellin anybody what to do...just what I'm doin, is all.
