6ppc shoulder bump

What do I need to measure my cases to see how much I'm bumping my case shoulders after I full length resize with a Harrell die. Thanks in advance for sharing the knowledge!

A caliper, digital is simpler for most of us, and either the brass gauge that Lynwood send along or better yet, a Hornady Head space gauge. That should do it. Got to Harbor Freight and get a $10 digital caliper and if you didn't get that little brass piece, PM me and I'll send you one. But the Hornady tool will work better for you.

You need a tool that will measure headspace such as this from Sinclair:

And the proper insert:

Gooday guys

Hi Edd

Can you use just the inserts and not the body to get a measurement.? Or does the pointy part of the bullet stick out the other side?
Being all chambers are different?

Yes you need the body. In fact they make two bodies just in case you want to do the measurement with a bullet in the case (the longer one), and the standard one. The body attaches to one of the caliper's blades

Getting back to the OP, you do not need anything but the brass piece that Harrell's furnished and a caliper....period. Be sure to either reseat the primer in the fired case, or remove it, before measuring it. For that die, you have all the tools that you need, assuming that you have a caliper, and that the die came with the brass piece. If you do not have it, call them and they will probably send you one. I have every sort of tool and this is how I set my 6PPC die. It works just fine. Keep it simple.

Remove the firing pin from your bolt. Insert sized case into chamber. Put bolt into action, close bolt. There should be a slight resistance at the bottom of the bolt stroke.

The problem with that method is that not all will feel the same amount of resistance. Also some actions impart more resistance that others. The bump should only be .001-.002, the only way to truely measure that is with a set of the proper tools. Measure a fired case then resize and measure the setback.

In my experience, my bolt will close as I've stated above with .001" shoulder set back. At .002" set back the bolt will fall closed by itself (Stolle Panda). I do use a Redding small base bushing die and competition shell holders to resize my brass.

Thanks to all, and that was the problem Boyd. I have the Harrell's FL sizing die but didn't have the brass piece. I called Harrell's an they shipped me one out with no charge. Really nice guys at Harrell's. Again thanks alot guys for all the help. See you at Pencil Bluff Ray!
