6PPC scope

What are peoples thoughts/experience on scope power for shooting at 100/200 yds....I am thinking of a March fixed power (weight more if go variable)...40 vs 50 power....mirage seems to be biggest issue with 50x. Any thoughts??

if you are talking target, br, then 36x should do all you need and not be bad on mirage, however i have had very good lukc with 24x and 1/16dot

Unless you are shooting serious competition you can't beat a Weaver 36X for the 6PPC. I like the fine cross hair and the price is right at around $400.

The Weaver T-36x is an excellent choice, and I see a lot of them on the short distance match firing lines, and winning too. If you can go for a higher cost one, I would suggest the new Leupold Competition Series in 35x, 40x, and 45x with 45mm objective. I now have two, and am very pleased with them. Excellent glass, clarity, brightness, tracking, etc. The only gripe I have is the target knob system of re-setting to the zero reference, but I can live with that.

A lot of March followers are going to the straight 40 because of the mirage issue. Call Jackie Schmidt at 832-689-4157 before you drop a lot of money on something you may later regret. Jackie has purchased many and sold many March's over the last couple of years so he could probably steer you in the right direction.

outdoorsman: You are right on. I would not want to go any higher than 40x with a fixed power scope. More than that & I require a variable, like my Nightforce's for the mirage issue alone. Unless it is an extreme mirage, I can handle the 40x, but that's just me, others may have more or less problems.

I have a T-36 on my 6PPC. Works fine for 100/200/300 yards. I have a 10x40x50 on my LR 6.5x47 and must dial back when the mirage is bad. Can't do that with the T-36.

BTW. I'm new to this forum. Very nice. Especially with the 6.5x47 Lapua posts.

For competition shooting in LV class with the 6 ppc, does not a variable power scope add too much weight?

Not necessarily, it depends on the weight of each individual component.

A good gunsmith can take all your needs into consideration and suggest components that will keep you at or under the NBRSA's 10 pounds and 8 ounces barrier or limit for the Light Varmint class.

Billy Stevens is a great gunsmith and top level competitor who can do just that: http://www.stevensaccuracy.com/html/benchrest.html

Right now he's either heading for or at Kelbly's Range in Ohio for the Super Shoot May 25-28 and won't be back in the shop until June 1st.

As mentioned, it depends on the weight of the components that make up the rifle. I have 3 LV rifles that make weight with a March 36-55, even with an action that is some 35oz. But you cannot afford to have a heavy stock and a heavy scope.

I do not agree with some of the comments that 36 is plenty of magnification for benchrest. I personally like 40 plus. My scopes are either 45 power Leoupold Comps, or March 36-55. That magnification helps to keep the groups small when you can see each shot as it makes the group. To some degree, its what you get used to, but I got to liking high magnification pretty quickly.
